Generator light comes on at idle, but goes away or dims as engine speed increases. I have replaced the belt, had the alternator repaired, but still have the problem. I did a search on similar problems and found there is a ground by the brake pedal that sometimes gets cruddy or disconnected. Since this happened right after I installed a tilt column, I wonder if maybe that's my problem. Is this the ground that was mentioned? I've got it circled but it's still hard to see. Should I take it back to the alternator shop? TIA, baking
What year and model is this car? I don't know about that ground- the wiper ground is right in there, too. it all looks very familiar but without my head upside down in the car it's very disorienting to me- but that looks like the main ground in my dash ('70 Skylark) here's a thread from a similar problem, if the ground isn't the trouble: http://www.v8buick.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=2378&highlight=generator+light
Oops!! 1970 Skylark. My light varies in intensity with engine speed. It goes out when I get up to 40mph or so and shines brightly at idle. Kind of like a slipping belt, but it was replaced when I was screwing around with the cooling problem.
External Regulator Alternator The alternator light in the dash is controlled by the voltage regulator on the firewall. Have you replaced the regulator or had it tested.
