(Another dummy) What carb is on my Nailhead?

Discussion in 'The Venerable Q-Jet' started by BamaWildcat, May 18, 2004.

  1. The motor was replaced in one of my 1964 Wildcats with a 1966 motor before I bought the car. The carb has an RP on it, and on the metal tag the following is stamped: 7024. Under the 7024, it is stamped B4. At an angle by 7024, 31 is stamped. Is this a correct carb for '66? I need some info on this as I need to rebuild it. It spits gas out the side! I can't find any info on the carb page everyone links to.

I'm inclined to believe you have a rochester 4 barrel square bore (4gc), non- quadrajet carb. If it is, you will have 4 brass tubes that are cut at an angle pointing toward each other as viewed from the top.

The numbers you gave mean nothing to me, but perhaps someone more knowlegable can decipher them for you. Can you take a picture and post it? :bglasses:

  3. The biggest reason I ask about this carb as it does not match the carb on my '64. I assume they should be the same carb as they are both 401s. Here are the pictures of the carb that is on the 66 motor in the 64 Wildcat. This is the carb I need info on:

That's a Rochester 4GC alright. The Nailheads came with either the Rochester or a Carter AFB. There should be 3 more numbers on that tag following the "7024". This number indicates a 1964 model year carb (maybe original to the car?), but who knows when it could have been changed in the last 40 yrs.

If you are looking for a rebuild kit for the carb, tell them its for a 7024040. The kit will cover dozens of carbs from the '50s to '60s and should work fine. If you carefully follow all the directions in the kit and make all the adjustments as advised (as if it was a 7024040), this carb should provide good performance for a stock engine.

The 4GC is the forerunner to the Q-jet and is somewhat more "primitive". It doesn't have any metering rods, just pri. and sec. jets, and a seperate power piston. It does have an "air door" in the secondary bores, but it doesn't tailor secondary fuel flow with rods like the Q-jet does. Tuning parts are not generally available for these carbs, so if you're looking to modify your engine you might want to think about switching to the AFB.

    carb no.'s

    more no.'s

    Hope this helps.

I have never used a Rochester 4gc carb, but I can tell you from my own experience, the Carter is a great carb.......although one single Carter will not go as fast as one Quardajet, since you have a square bore intake manifold, I suggest you locate a Carter carb. I see them on ebay all the time. :bglasses:

  7. Update: I soaked the carb tag, and it is indeed a Rochester from 64. The tag is actually double stamped in a place, with 31 over the "040" part of the ID. It's ID was 7024040. So I know for sure the motor is a 66, and the carb is a 64, hopefully the original for the car. Now if I can just stop the gas from coming out all over the place (I'll cover that in another thread. Thanks guys!

By the way, my other nailhead has the carter :beer

Looks like whoever put the '66 motor in your car kept the carb, linkages and detent from the '64. Instead of looking for a rebuild kit which are typically about $35 for that carb find yourself an original '64 Carter AFB(same as your other '64?). The 4gc is not a very good design.
