    Howdy,
The usual problem is a lack of sufficient fluid. You might start by looking carefully at the cylinders on each side for leakage. If there's no leakage, and the lines look empty or have a lot of bubbles, climb into the trunk with a bottle of tranny fluid, towel and a turkey baster. On the side with the funny bolt head, carefully pull the black rubber plug out and fill slowly with fluid until it starts to drip out and replug. Run top down and back up and repeat. It should get quieter and faster as you fill it.
If it's dry, you might want to pull the pump and clean out the reservoir and the check balls. It's pretty easy, but looks intimidating. Old dried fluid can deposit in the pump, and prevent it from working if you refill it. First, drain the lines by running the pump in top-down mode, to pull any fluid back to the pump. Then carefully remove the lines and pry it out of the mount(careful to keep the rubber mounts from ripping). On the bench, drain the reservoir then remove the funny-headed bolt from the end and pop off the reservoir. You can reuse the bevelled o-ring. Then, remove the bolts you see to the motor housing and pop off the plate, careful not to lose the check-balls(2). Clean with whatever cleaner you have handy that works, and steel wool any rough spots on the balls. Reassemble and put back into the car before refilling with tranny fluid and follow the above turkey baster-towel-fluid procedure until it moves fast and quiet. It sounds like a lot of work, but can be done in a few hours of leisure while viewing football or golf. Dan
