Any secrets to keeping the original green finish?

I have a couple of Q-jets that I would like to rebuild. They have that great original green finish under 30+ years of yuck. I have not had good luck removing the just the dirt and not the finish with the aggressive carb cleaners and a toothbrush. Any ideas of what works well? Thanks in advance. T

    Tom:

A good quality carb cleaner that you can soak your carb. in for several hours and then wash with hot water and plenty of rinsing and blowing with compressed air shouldn't affect the original color.

I always do the above first, then bead blast and recolor my carbs back to original finish with a chemical dip that etches the metal.

Hey Dave : Wondering if you still do rebuilds/detailing on Q-Jets ?

Or give me some assistance on where /what you do for re-plating.

Could you send me a PM ?

    Thanx Dave

Upper throttle blades should remain natural steel and is differerent than main body. Most rebuild people color these as well but incorrect.

    sending PM.

The chemical I use to recolor the bodies etches the metal in an immersion bath. It doesn't wash or wear off.
I've done the upper throttle blades (primary and secondary) several ways. They are supposed to be a natural steel as Dave mentioned. However its often difficult to bring back that natural finish and have them retain that look. I've scotchbrited the blades with a wheel and it looks pretty good if the wheel is fine enough. Moreoften I either bright zinc plate them or better yet gold cadmium plate them. It isn't the 100% concours look, but it does look very good, probably better than the natural finish. Seems alot of the Ebay carbs are done that way now.
I usually wait til the winter months to do the carbs and distributors as its a hobby to redo these things and summer is the time to play :3gears:

If you want more info. or some work done, just PM me.
