I have a small annoying leak on my pass. side exhaust manifold, what is the best way to replace them and what do i need to do before i snap or strip a bolt on my 401?

    Thanks

    George,
There is no gasket on either side of the exhaust manifolds. My guess is the manifold heat control valve may not be working properly, or may be sticking in the closed position. I suggest you find a 65 Buick service manual for the Gran Sport models, it has a good explanation of how this works. I would try first to spray some WD 40 or similar lubricant, so you have less chance of busting the bolts, then loosen the 2 bolts before you try to re tighten. Before doing the above, check to see if the the exhaust pipe is rusting through. Hope this helps. Take care george.

Bill,it seems like the exhaust manifold is leaking,if the manifold heat control is the thing on the exhaust under the manifolds,i had it checked out yestaerday,it was fine, but it sounds like its leaking from the head on the exhaust manifolds, the driver side seems like they put gaskets on them but not on the pass. side, why dont the nailheads have exhaust manifold gaskets?

    Thanks

    George,
Sorry I didn't even think of the exhaust gaskets on the heads. You are right, there are gaskets for the exhaust to heads and they are a bear to get to, You can most likely find the gaskets at your local part store, if not try Year one or Original Parts Group. Mine came in the overhaul kit for my engine. They were in two sections per side. Each gasket does two exhaust ports. I had my fenders off when I put mine on so it wasn't too hard. You may have a sore back trying this with fenders on. Let us know how you are doing. Take care George.
