Im in the market for a truck. I looked at a 94 dodge 3/4 ton with a cummins and an auto trans. Its in nice shape and has a little over 100k on it. Are there any typical problems to look for on one of these trucks? Ive heard from some people that they are absolute tanks and do not break, and ive also heard that they had weak trannies.

A friend of mine has a 2000 Dodge dually with the cummins/auto. It has 140000 miles and he has already replaced the tranny. Great motors/trannys?

Own early '98 12 valve Cummins 5 speed 3/4 ext cab. When it's in town, even my wife can drive it with ease. Sure they're a little louder (with the windows rolled down) than the new Dodges & new DuraMaxs, but we're talking close to 1/3 the cost today of a new diesel 3/4 ton. For that kind of money, who cares how loud with the windows down :Do No:

Bought the '98 Cummins used at 75K miles 3 1/2 years ago. Today at 133K, ZERO problems, runs very well, gets 21mpg on the road, 17 in town. Would get better if didn't have a minimum 1500 lbs of stuff in the back at all times.

Specifically searched for an early '98 as wanted one of the last of the 12valves, easy to turn up, mod. My reasoning at the time, 24 valve mid '98 ups are fly by wire, more electronics. Today with huge aftermarket support, would buy a 24 valve in a heartbeat.

    My Dodge Cummings Banks turbo

I have a 96 1 ton dually with the banks turbo system. Much better than the factory one that it ccame with. It is the inline six. I also have the boost gauge and exhaust temp exhaust. It's an automatic. I've found the truck to get just around 20 or slighly less in normal in town driving and with a 3300 lbs campers on the back, driving all over the eastern Sierras, got around 15. I've researched extensively the problems with these dodges and the consensus from the "experts" is that the stock torque converter starts to go away, leaving small particles that end up in the trans causing the trans to fail. Most trans places address only the trans as a failure and replace it again and the problem will persist unless the torque converter is upgraded substantially. I'm in the process of doing mine. Better trans parts, much better torque converter, HP fuel injectors etc. There is a white dually, exactly like mine in all aspects except for performance upgrades that include propane injection that runs 12s. That's the six cylinder.I can give you a few places on the web that deal with problems etc., on these trucks.

I agree, don't get an auto unless someone has beefed it up. Get a five speed or six speed.

    Also - Check out ...

This is a full service Dodge/Cummins site. Check the classified section. There are usually lots of trucks for sale here, too.
