Lower ratio (higher numerically). Such as running 4.10:1 gears rather than 3.08:1. Great for short distance acceleration, poor for long term, highway speed cruising.

Automobile-catalog.com states theoretically 15.09 sec@89 MPH with 2:56 gears, three other options for the 1970 Buick Electra were 2:78,3:23,and 3:91 gears. Someone on the aaca website has a nice article about his 1970 Buick Wildcat and his ran stock, with 2:78 gears at 15.9 sec at 90 MPH at the track, after recurving the distributor, and changing to a 2200 stall converter his best was 14.58@92.58 miles per hour. In the same article someone stated that their stock 1969 electra convertibe ran 15.5 sec@89mph. Never timed my 1970 buick electra in the quarter mile, but had mine@ 135 mph (GPS) with 2:78 gears and a Poston 118 cam, and it still had a little bit more before I got out of it,luckily. After I got out of it a Maxima passed me and got a ticket, after he failed to get past me initially.(2009-2012 body style Maxima). I have 3:23's in it now, and a 3:42 laying around that will go in next...

Smokey15 So old that I use AARP bolts.

If our '62 LeSabre is any indication, you could time one with a sundial.

My Electra won't take on a nicely done Skylark, or even a big block Chevelle. The last Hemi I was forced to race exploded before he disgraced me. I gave him a good run for his money before his engine let go though. The Wildcat regularly schools Mustangs, and people in modern cars who think they are something. I might give a Chevelle or a Skylark a good run for the money, but in the end, light weight will win, even though it's only about 700 lbs difference we're talking about.

The video above would even be more funny if the Electra had the AC on. He might have.

I remember an old episode of Car and Track where Bud and his driver thrash the hell out of a 455 Centurion. Can't remember what it ran but it wasn't a slouch, maybe someone will post a link?

When I was young and growing up in CT, we used to go to Long Island to watch some street racing. There was money involved.

Early '70s Electras were cheap and plentiful then. There were some guys who used to buy a bone-stock Electra, remove the A/C, spare, the whole interior, some of the electric window regulators, etc. They's even take a hole saw to the frame. Then they'd put in the nitrous.

It was really something to watch one of those reach half-track and then hunker-down and scream it's way to the finish line...:)
