Just bought an 50" HDTV upgradeable Mitsubishi V550111. Did not pick up the HDTV decoder. Currently use roof antenna to two existing sets that are not HDTV capable (heck they're 13 and 18 years old). Want to get DirectTV or Dish satellite. Customer service (the 1 800 crew) reps say 1. need decoder for HDTV satellite dish set up; or, 2. don't need decoder for HDTV satellite dish set up. I didn't buy decoder because I thought the satellite dish receiver would tune and decode both over the air and satellite signals for HDTV. So what is your experiences or suggestions. Do I get the HDTV decoder and then order satellite HDTV package. Do I just order satellite HDTV package. Simply put do I need two boxes: a HDTV decoder and HDTV satellite receiver; or just a HDTV satellite receiver which will decode. I got faked out and am a lil confused! TIA
Jim, You do not need two decorders. The one you recieve from Direct TV or Dish Net is all you need to recieve hdtv Satellite or over the air. Note that you will need an additional attenna to receive over the air hd. Mine came w/ my Direct TV package. Have fun. Jim
I Have DIsh Network and They have a seperate reciever for HDTV, that is not currently abailable... (There starting a Waiting list ) :af: They did say however that if your in an area that Local channels are available (Like mine) that you get those HDTV as well:TU:
HDTV Jim - You should also check to see whats available in HD. You may find that the only shows available in HD are not shows will you watch...you might wait as the industry is still trying to figure this out! My 2 cents.. - Bill
I also agree that you just need the one HDTV box from the sat. I also agree to see what channels are available in HDTV. I know last year DirectTV only had a few channels that were being broadcast in HDTV. I'll tell you this, though, when you see a HDTV broadcast on a HDTV capable set, you'll be blown away.
