i was swapping batteries out on my regal today. replacement was dead so i just put the first one back in. well when i went to start it, it started up and fell flat on its face. it would idle for nothing, unless you had your foot on the gas a little bit. after some inspecting, im thinking my idle load compensator is broken because the plunger has alot of play like something internally is broken, even with the engine running. does anyone know where i can get one of these? thanks

Do you mean the solenoid on the side of the carb, that acts on the throttle lever?

Did you test it by applying battery voltage to it?

If there's no power to it, it will act just like you describe.

yes, its on the right side of the carb, when looking from the front. no i havent tested it. what will it do if its working? i turned up the idle by turning the hex(?) head screw on the bottom below it so its running fine now. will the idle suddenly go up of its working?

Left and Right are always referenced from a person sitting in the driver's seat. So that'd be on the left side of the carb.

The central stem will jump out like you fed it a bottle of Viagra. It pushes on the throttle lever. MOST of them do not have enough force to actually MOVE the lever--but--if you open the throttle a bit, it has enough strength to hold it open.

There are two reasons for the idle solenoid--to increase the idle speed when the A/C is operating (in which case it's only active when the A/C compressor is running) or as an idle stop solenoid--the carb screw is turned to a very low speed, the engine relies on the solenoid for the normal idle speed--and when you turn off the ignition, you kill the power to the solenoid, the throttle closes even more, and the engine does not "run on".

Figure out when yours is supposed to work--and you'll know how to adjust it.
