Are Repro Chrome Air Cleaner Covers Correct?

The chrome air cleaner cover on my 69 Riv GS needs rechroming. local shops say $125.

The Parts Place sells repro chrome covers for $59. So I could buy two of theirs, put one on my GS 400, and still cover shipping.

So are the repro one absolutely correct? or are they slightly different / somehow generic GM kinda things?

Or does someone else make a better repro for less?

You have to be carefull with those lids.. A chevy lid is slightly different than a Buick lid eventhough it will fit without a problem and most people would not know the difference. I believe the Pontiac and Olds lids are the same as Buick so you may be safer to try one listed for those cars.

you may want to shop around to see if you can get your lid re-chomed for less $. $125 sounds high to me :Do No: $75 - $80 sounds more realistic.

Well, I guess chroming prices are driven by the yacht industry down here. :Do No: The chrome work is probably top notch / yacht quality; I got that price from two different shops.

The Parts Place lists their piee as beinbg for Buicks. Any know for sure if they are right?

Okay, my wife bought me one for Christmas.

(Hey, you can't spell "christmas party" without "car parts".)

Anyway, no gasket, which I believe I saw discussed somewhere, so I expected I'd have to install a new one.

    Can I buy them somewhere?

Parts Place claims these are correct for us and not just close variation. :Do No: Sounds like you have one in hand? I heard they were nice.......

They are pretty damn close, but not 100% identical. Sorry -- no pictures cause the camera is out of action.

-- The gasket groove area is about 1/2" deep; the original is about 7/16" deep.

-- The bottom of the outer lip is slightly larger -- the repro has a 3/16" square relief; the original has maybe a 1/8" rounded relief.

-- The 11" diameter indentation on the repro is not quite as deep and at a 45% angle; the original has an almost vertical break to it.

-- The repro has a reinforcing disc tacked to the underside at the center hole; the original did not. But it is not visible with the lid installed and is probably an improvement to keep the wing nut from distorting the center when tightened.

-- The chrome job probably gets a 90 out of 100.

Final answer: looks perfect from 5 feet away, but not 100% correct.

Hey, at the price they charge, I'm not complaining. Whole lot better than $150 and the risk of nasty pits on the old one showing up through the new chrome.

    Hey Steve -
They are almost identical, but not 100 % as you stated, but you can't beat the price ! Here's the pics - you be the judge.
I used the original gasket out of an old cover which was in decent shape! :TU:
