I have a 3 speed manual I'm in the process of installing into my 300cid '66 Special.....but I'd rather have a 5 speed! What cars used a 5 speed manual, that I'm likely to find at a junkyard for a decent price? It only needs to hold up to 250 hp or so, it ain't a big-block! (yet)
    Thanks1

5 speed Fox bodied mustang transmissions should have enough beef to hold up to that 300. Problem would be finding the bellhousing, but Im sure someone here will know.

except for the crappola T-50s, I think any decent five speed you find will have a shifter that goes right on top of the tailshaft housing. So keep in mind any swap you plan may require floor modification or a shifter relocator. Unless yours is a three on the tree, then you'll be able to cut a fresh hole. Anyhow, A Camaro T-5 should do ya. Probably a $300-$500 unit. I suggest arming yourself with knowledge since four cylinder S-10s used a T-5 also. I've heard there are strength differences, but I dunno for sure. Count on a clutch change to a fine spline as well. Good luck!

Stick with a T-5 from a firebird or Camaro. I beleive 87 and earlier are the weeker version as opposed to the 88-up "world class" versions. The early models can be upgraded however. Keep in mind these are not real strong in fact if i recall correctly only 305 cars were available with a 5 speed the 350 cars were only avalable with automatic.
Lastly the camaro/firbird T-5 will bolt up to a belhousing that for example a muncie would bolt up to, however the tranny will be rotated towards the driver side a few degrees. Some motification to the shifter will be in order.
    Good luck

I am trying to do the same thing right now. I have a 64 special Wagon with a 3 speed I just picked up. Want to swap it out for a 5 speed t5. It has been hard to find any info anywhere that says it will bolt up using the factory bellhousing. I have had a few people say yea it should, but have not found any that have , using a 64-66 bellhousing.
That is good advise by Floydsbuick on the world class vs non. world class. try to stick with that later 88 if you can ,I have found that said on several internet sites regarding the t5 trans. Let me know how it goes.
