im trying to find out if anybody knows what a good comparible tire would be to the old school 50s? i used to have 50s on my old novas and buicks back in the day and now ive purchased a 72 skylark that i want to put some serious wide tires in rear without having to modify anything, the springs are allready redone and rear end sits decently high! any suggestions or pics for tire and rim size would be greatly appreciated

Doo Wop Where were you in '62?

Try 295/50/15 tires on a 10" rim with 5 1/2" of backspacing....that'll do the trick.

so you think that will give me that old school look that i gotta have? was thinking about 50s in rear and 70s up front with a nice rake

Just remember a 295-50 r15 tire is 26.6" tall, so if you want rake that would limit the size of your front 70 series tire, if you're trying to keep a forward rake. The rear tire might end up shorter than the front, requiring your suspension to make up the difference.

That tire on that rim will center it in the wheel well and have no rubbing issues. Now if you want the "old school" look of the seventies, get rims that only have 3.33" backspacing. Then they'll stick out past the wheel well lip. And on that rim you can put a 325/50R15 tire. That's what I have on my car. I have a thread with pics. Here it is. Check posts #41-44. And if you look close at #42, you can see where I trimmed the top of the wheel well for assured clearances. http://www.v8buick.com/showthread.php?15046-My-new-new-15x10-s-are-here!!!/page2

I dont wanna sound stupid here but never been good with tire and wheel sizes....i have 15x7 alum rims and i want to put the largest tire i can in the back while still looking good? I really want this car to have a good street stance with fat meats out back and slimmer tires in the front! Just got the car home this am and looked at the rims in trunk 15x7 western wheels (SLOTs) i have enough lift in rear springs right now to clear most anything so i guess i just need a winning combo for that old street car look.......and thank you very much for your help brother

You are going to need wider wheels if you want to put fat tires on the back. Make sure those 15 X 7's have 4.25" of back spacing. The widest tire would be a P275/60R-15 (28") or a P275/50R-15 (26"). Technically, you should have an 8" wide wheel for that, but you can get away with it. It will pull the tread up a bit, but it will work.

IMO "the look" really needs wide rims w/BGF DRs...but that'll take you out of daily driver mode...:)

If you like the looks of this then buy a set of summit wheels and enjoy.

These are my street tires 285/70/R15. They are about the max height you can fit in the wheel well at 31" tall. As said above the 5.5" backspacing on a 15X10 wheel is pretty much perfect.

For the track I am using the same rims but with a 295/55/15 which is 28" tall, 12.5" wide and fits well.

My 15x10 rallys with et streets look pretty fat. As a matter of fact the lip has to be rolled to make em fit.
