hello all! well Doc, it all happened one day browsing Craigslist. I was looking for an old car as a starter for my resto skills and stumbled upon a 1967 Buick Skylark. Something about the tarp covered beast had me hooked, perhaps its sad look of help, touched my inner soul like watching those ASPCA commercials. What ever it was, I suddenly found my self making an offer on the poor thing. ok, all dramatics aside. I'm not quite a Buick owner, but I'm in the process of acquiring my first Buick. The Car is a 1967 Buick Skylark 4-dr Sedan 340-2 Engine, St-300, 72K miles. The last year or so I've been looking for something to wrench on during my free time, and having something fun to cruise in (other than my wife's toyota o No Having been a Mopar guy for quite a while (97 Dodge Ram is my DD and knowing way to much about a car I've never owned: Valiants/Dusters). I know next to nothing about Buicks other than I want one. So, I plan on being here to soak up all the information I can get after the loan officer (wife. ray approves it. That said, a little side question. does anyone own a Red 1972(ish?) Buick GS w/350 that they purchased from a guy in Sandwich Illinois? that had a Volo Car Museum sticker on back? about 6 or so years back I saw it for sale, that car is responsible for for this. :Brow:
It's quite alright, happens even to the best of us . I originally started look for a good 60's commuter car to go back and forth to school with (with a slant 6, or a modest V8), and eventually ended up with a Buick Wildcat, the second largest car Buick ever made with a 455, as it turns out. What happy accidents, no?
Well I hate to say it but the bug that bit you has been very busy! BTW this place is quite addictive too. Enjoy the car and welcome! Scott
Welcome to the board! I, too, consider myself a Mopar guy, having had a 74 Charger (360), 72 Challenger (360), 70 Challenger (318), 70 Valiant (/6), and a 71 Duster (318-4 spd) before, and currently an 05 Dakota V8. I was in the right place at the right time when I found my 70 Skylark, and I've been hooked since. I'm about to drop a 455 in when I get home and then the real fun will begin. Good luck! :beer
yes, i know how addicting these sites (and the cars) can be. Joined a Dodge forum a while back for my truck and ended up learning alot of stuff, hopefully I'll have the same experience here. Only two car's I've owned were a '97 Pontiac Grand Am GT, my '97 Dodge Ram, figure I've had good luck with sevens so far so a '67 sounded like a good deal! Any tips or things I should look at on the Skylark before I make it final? maybe common problems etc....
Well here are some pictures of the soon to be Skylark, nothing fancy but I just loved the way it drove! http://i1219.photobucket.com/albums/dd423/urbancowboy0307/102_1021.jpg http://i1219.photobucket.com/albums/dd423/urbancowboy0307/102_1022.jpg http://i1219.photobucket.com/albums/dd423/urbancowboy0307/102_1023.jpg http://i1219.photobucket.com/albums/dd423/urbancowboy0307/102_1024.jpg One real bad rust spot behind the drivers side real wheel, and a couple little wholes here and there, just surface rust on the roof. Pretty clean interior and rest of the car is pretty solid.
Looks nice! I stumbled on mine when I wasn't even looking for a project, but I could not resist. Best of luck with it!
Welcome to the board and nice project! Mines not red, but it came from Volo about 16 years ago. :beers2:
I also was looking for a project to be my first. I was looking for a 69 firebird convertible, but setteled for this 72 skylark with 48k miles. I couldn't be happier with the way things turned out, as I am sure you will be also. I like the one off cars. Camaro's and chevels are a dime a dozen Buicks are more rear and 4 doors are even more rear than that for restoration projects. If I would have found this site when I first bought my car I would have saved myself time and money, but I am here now and so are you. Welcome and enjoy your project, even in the dark days. There are always dark days before the sun shines.
Oh yea!!! That Skylark is awesome! Nice find and welcome to the board! :TU: :beer I'm itching to detail that engine bay! :Brow:
welcome aboard!!! I had been searching, for several months, for a 1970 chevelle malibu like the one i ordered/owned from new. My brother, while searching for a show car of his own, came across a '72 buick gs. the price was right and the paint & body were very good (no rust), so i bought it on the spot. yes, i have have spent many $$$$ restoring the car to my requirements culminating in a complete repaint & new vinyl roof in 2009. My GS is fabulous!
Welcome to the Buick family. The car looks to be in decent conditon for the years and the salty roads. :beer
Always did like a gal wearing skirts, welcome to our addiction. Spent my early years with a '66 Satellite 4 gear but thats what floated my boat then.
yea, I was looking at numbers made for 4-dr sedans, Buick only made about 9000 of them in that year. I wasn't ever really into 4-drs but something about this caught my eye (and the price wasn't too bad  $1300?). I was actually surprised how good the interior is, couple tears on the seats, and the back package tray is going to need replacement, along with a couple cracks in the steering wheel. But it's got everything, all the chrome trim is there, the hub caps are in the trunk. Although I'm not a huge fan of the interior color, with as many good parts that are in there (no sagging headliner or cracked dash) I figure I'll just keep it that color, rather than try to change it. The guy that owned it before put dual exhausts with cutouts on it. Engine fires right up, no leaks on it. Trannys got a little leak, but I've read that's normal for the ST300 if they don't run very often. Power steering and brakes work REAL good. Most of the sheet metal is in real good shape. The spot on the rear quarter is the worst as it's created a whole into the trunk. other than that little dime sized wholes here and there (rocker panels, cowl etc probably worse then they look) I only ask about that, because back in 2005 I ran across a red GS complete no rust the guy wanted $2500 for it (sounded kinda fishy...) but at the time, I was driving a '97 Grand Am, and couldn't convince my parents to sell the grand am and get the GS (I was 17 at the time i think)o No: So i was just curious if someone here had picked that up. Up till that point I did not know Buick made anything other that the things my Grandparents owned (boy, have I gotten an education!)
I like Dodges, too. My current (and, its predecessor) daily driver is a Dodge Durango. I like your Buick. '67 has good styling. And, the color(white over blue) is perfect! And, Welcome!
Thanks for all the welcomes, the day is drawing closer to when i'll hand of a small piece of paper for a slightly larger sheet of paper and set of keys!:eek2:
