    Here's a story for you,32 years ago I had a 66 electra 2dr with a 65 425 in it. A buddy and I stripped it as it was tired and smoking,well you didn't need any measurimg tools to see it needed reboring. The lips on the two front cylinders were huge (due to someone running it with no thermostat apparently) to the point that the pistons would not slide out of the bores as the rings were catching on the ridges at the top of the bore. I had to use 2 feeler gauges and get them slid down past the rings then push the pistons up and the feeler gauges acted like little ramps up and over the ridges. I cant remember the mesurements of the wear but it was a lot, a set of 60 over pistons were found which were big enough to clean up all but one bore. The machine shop actually offset that bore to clean up the ridge on the thrust side of that bore:eek2: It makes me cringe knowing what I know now but I was just an 18 year old kid at the time. The happy ending is the motor ran strong,didn't give any trouble and ran a best of 15.1 at the local drag strip ( put a mild cam,headers and a 600 holley on while rebuilding it). Ya gotta wonder if its still going somewhere???

    I had the machine shop sonic check the cylinders so I could determine whether I could go .040 over and skip the sleeve. Well sonic check results are back from the machine shop and things don't look as good as I would have liked :(.

    The results are included in the attached PDF file. I also added sections which showed the wall thickness assuming a .040" overbore and a .020" overbore, by subtracting .020 and .010 from each actual measurement. In reality this would not be exact, because the actual measurements account for some existing cylinder wear, but this does give me a sense of where I will be after boring. The .020" scenario shows a sleeve in #7, as it is already over 0.025" worn right under the ridge.

    I am a little suspect of some of the actual measurements, as this particular machine shop does not normally sonic check and even had to borrower the tester from someone to run my test. For example, cylinders 1, 3 and 5 show thin in the middle of the cylinder. I expected core shift would show with a consistent decrease or increase as you move up or down the cylinder. Am I wrong about this?

    I thought I read somewhere that 0.150" is the minimum on cylinder wall thickness, but I don't know if that applies to the pin sides or only the major and minor thrust sides. I did see another thread where .100" was mentioned as the minimum on the pin sides; in fact it was a real life example of an engine that now makes over 500hp. Anyone know what the correct minimum is and which sides of the cylinder it applies to (major, minor, pin). Either way, I bolded anywhere that the measurement would drop below 0.150".

    The one realization from the exercise is that going .040" isn't the best idea with this block, as there are too many areas dropping below the 0.15" minimum. Assuming I go with the sleeve and .020" overbore then I still have few spots below 0.150". Can I offset bore the cylinders showing thin areas to correct these issues? That would mean the following offsets:

    #1 - .010" towards the outside and front
    #5 - .010" towards the outside and I have no idea how to fix the pin sides. Is there a maximum I can offset? I would need .040" to get the front to .150", but that would put the back slightly below .150". The good news is that I will still be filling the block up to the freeze plugs which will add some stability to the bottom of this cylinder.
    #8 - .020" towards the back


    I am really trying to use this block as it is the numbers matching block for the car. Does this sound like the right plan? Am I looking at this correctly? Any advice would be appreciated?

    I have been following your thread as I am just about to start a similar build. It took me a while to get to this point as I read all the threads that others posted within this thread that provided valuable information.:Brow: I am not familiar with the minimum cylinder wall to water jacket thickness on the nailhead but I can tell you on the 348/409 blocks it is .100. Here is a sonic check of my stoked 348 at .060 over and it ended up with a .080 over bore as the first machine shop screwed up royal...:blast: Thinnest wall is .115 on inside #8 non thrust side. And yes it is a #'s matching FH code 348/350 3X2 block...:Brow: As others have said make sure you ask lots of questions and the machine shop you are dealing with is honest. I have had no problems with cooling and it runs like a Banshie. 458hp 489fpt.

    I'd sleeve the cyl as long as you have confidence in the person doing the work. $83 plus sleeve is reasonable. Sleeving is quite common in engine rebuilding. My 425 has sleeves in all eight cylinders. For reference that cost $1000

    sorry for the slight irrelevency of this post. I was looking at your post at the end of page 1 and didn't notice there was a page 2. duh. Still getting used to the new layout.

    Wow, 8 sleeves, you must have really wanted to save this block. Yes, I will definately being sleeving the one cylinder. Just trying to get some idea on the minimum wall thickness on the remaining cylinders

    Looks like we have 1 vote for .100 as a minimum.

    only 179 MZ blocks were produced in '66. If it makes for a numbers matching engine in a '66 GS (post March 1966,) you bet it's worth it.

    Refering back to the earlier posts which talk about the availability of rings. Buick's 401's and 430's and their 425's and 455's share the same bores. Perhaps rings from one of these would be easier to find in the odd overbore sizes.

    I finally found the thread indicating a minimum cylinder wall thickness of 0.150". It is here:

    I believe I am going to move forward with my block anyway and hope the partial block fill will help support those thinner cylinders. The good news is that my thin areas are mostly on the pin sides of the cylinders.

    Looks like my build will be delayed for a while, as I need to find a new block. Spoke to the machine shop this morning and they let me know that the bottom of the cylinder broke as they were installing the sleeve. Since my goal to keep the numbers matching engine is no longer possible, I am going to see if I can find a buildable 425 block, to gain a few extra inches. Good news is that I the only parts I have purchased at this point are a set of heads and the cam and lifters, which I can use on the next block. Anyone know of a rebuildable 425 block for sale;preferably something that has not already been bored and doesn't need a sleeve.
