Several weeks ago on a Stock/Super Stock forum, an NHRA tech inspector posted about a Super Stocker that went into the sand trap and got torn up. The driver said he had no brakes. Upon further inspection the tech guy found that one of the GM aluminum brake drums on the rear had come apart. They checked the other side and it was cracked. He also said he has seen alot of these drums crack over the years and some come apart. Now we all know about using this things for less weight, but is it worth it? I was looking into a rear axle seal leak on my GS and decided to look at the brake drums. They were both cracked! I just put these on a few months ago. They were not cracked when I put them on. They only have two passes on them. I don't want to risk them coming apart at 122 MPH and causing harm to my car, me, or the guy in the other lane.

If you're using these brake drums, think twice. They're 20+ years old now. Nobody makes them anymore. I wonder why?

It's not worth a couple hundredths ET to risk life and limb!!

Where exactly were they cracked??? Also, did anyone happen to measure the drums that cracked, they wouldn't have been beyond limits, would they??

    Good info. Thanks

Yup, I had mine turned a while back and noticed a badly pulsating pedal that started getting real bad....and ....sure enough, cracked steel liner on one of the aluminum drums. Thing was ready to grenade!. Problem is (was) GM was trying to get $135 each for 'em so used was the way to go. Or so we thought....
