Hoping to fire the engine up after the tear down today for 15 min to break in the cam. Still in the process of putting everything together. Spent a pile of money on Body parts and missing engine parts. I am buick poor again...LOL.
Rust free Arizona Inner fender wells and core suppport at the powder coaters as we speak
Rust free Arizona Front fenders and Doors
Complete Dash and cowl for repairs
It appears I am going to save this mess. May let it go eventually after I feel it is acceptable to sell to someone before completing. Then again I may just finish it. Stay tuned for the long haul it's gonna get interesting ..LOL

    Update
Started engine yesterday and all sounds fine. Having issues with the carb very lean in the idle curcuit for the SP 1165R mild cam I put in. Ran it enough to break the cam in and mess around with it a bit. With the 4 core radiator it never moved off the first mark on the temp reading. And that was with no fan shroud.
Will Post more updates in the appropriate restoration sections when they develop.

Do you feel the timing chain was the problem or the cam? I bet it was nice to hear it running smooth. :TU:

Hello Nelson (my Buick buddy:) )

It was the timing chain. When I tore the engine down I didn't like a couple spots on the lifters. They may have been alright but didn't want to take a chance. So I replaced it with a mild performance cam.
A very strange issue indeed. It did feel very good to know the engine is OK. I will post a video down the road. It sounds like a tractor with a loppy cam in it right now with no exhaust. That and the lean Idle condition its right radical. However once I make the mods to the carb should calm down and I will get a video.

    Hey Russell,
what timing chain did you end up using. I want to install a new one on my 72 along with new gaskets. It seems to run ok but I cannot not drive it to get a good feel so trying to cover everything. I did a cold compression test and they are @ 129 - 131. It does not seem to smoke but I am thinking about installing new valve stem seals. It has been setting for over fifteen years and I don not want to work on it after paint. Nice score on some great looking parts. Did AZ Joe help you out?
Glad to see my (my buick buddy):TU: able to turn a bad deal good, Nice job.....

I used SA Gear timing chain. (USA made) If you want to change valve seals you can ( they only use 8 on the exhaust valve) not a bad idea. However my new therory is don't mess with something that isn't broke..LOL. Compression looks good on that engine so you should be good to go.

I got the parts from all over. The doors and fender came from the Desert kings. (Very reasonable after wheeling and dealing for 2 months) . another fender from wheelz . Dash came from NC. ($100). Core support, inner fenders came from California (300). Have everything except a good hood molding to restore car from the doors foward. All the rear stuff I can buy aftermarket. Car is need of much labor and I will do most if not all of that.

I am having to wheel and deal to try and make the money back on this mess of a car. I could never sell a car like that to someone. Several convertibles I have restored (or Partial restored) are owned by people on this site. I have sold all kinds of chevelles all over the country and out of it...LOL. I haven't had any compliants because when you are honest you wont! :TU: .

I thought timing was the issue throughout the adventure of reading all the replies associated with this post. I was going to ask if you'd checked the rotor, it having been one of the very last things mentioned. Then the chain...it makes sense with what you were describing and what you found.

Good luck on finishing the vehicle which will allow you to focus your attention back on your 38.

How about carbon stuck on the valves causing them not to close all the way. Try cleaning them. Work the carb by hand and dump water down the carb a little at a time. That will clean the valves. This is a old timer trick that cleans the carbon off the valves. Just my thought
