I've had the Pertronix kit in for over a month now and still no problems. I'm not here to push or market the product, but as a consumer I am pleased with the kit and (so far) it's reliability.
I too installed a Pertronix kit (got it as a gift) a little over a month ago and I have nothing to report - which is a good thing I guess. Just to be clear, I never had any problems with my points either.
I used to have one of the 1st generation pertronix ignitors installed, and the problems with the magnets falling out of the ring were just too much. I also hated the wires hanging out of the distributor window. I upgraded to the Ignitor III system, complete with new Flame Thrower III coil & wires, and a OEM cap & rotor. Result: less moving parts, spark is bright & blue, adaptive dwell & adjustable rev limiting, and complete OEM appearance. I just got one of the Crane advance kits from Summit, gonna swap out some advance springs a bit & see if i can get a little more oomph at the low end.
Whoa!....whoa!!! What the heck??? My timing mark is on the other side of the engine! How did that happen? The car runs great but the mark is 180degrees off. What did i do? All i did was remove and reinstall distributor?
Yeah, firing order is correct. No misfire, solid power, good idle, starts quickly. Harmonic balancer in good shape, not seperated. Gotta be something wrong with timing gun.
Found this. Maybe it will help point you in the right direction.o No: http://www.v8buick.com/archive/index.php/t-232754.html
Tried it again this morning...must be something with timing gun. Timing mark was much closer to timing cover mark. Off by about 6 degrees, got it back to 4BTDC and it was smooth sailing down highway to work this morning. Hence concludes the upgrades and restorations for the season. Its 40 degrees and sunny in Minneapolis, still good enough to drive with the top down. :bglasses:
My Snap-On 2261 timing light sometimes fouls up, too. It's one of the Mexico-made ones, has all the features but the assembly isn't very good. The circuit board which has the keypad sometimes falls off the mounting studs, and the ribbon connector comes unplugged so none of the keys work. Gonna hot-glue it down, see if it works better.
I have the Pertronix Ignitor II, and it has been running well for about 6 months, until today. My 400 just cranks and cranks and won't start. I have been having an intermittent problem where it will crank and won't start and if I turn the ignition off and then back on it will start right up. The coil is sending a spark, and I pulled the first plug wire and it is getting a spark as well. It's also getting gas. Does this sound like the Pertronix problem? THanks, Bill
My buddy just installed an ignitor 3 module and coil to go with it. The installation was brainless and it has built in rev limiter.
Thanks larry. I am going to try that. I am out of the country for a week, then plan on working on the old girl. Bill
Ok...here is the one week report back. I'm very pleased with lectriclimited.com unit. The kit itself was easy to install although i would recommend removing distributor....its not necessary though. Idle is great, take off is fabulous, cruise at 80mph is achieved without stress. Issues i had with kit were later diagnosed as issues with something else and not kit itself. End of report, glad i went with it.
