Looking for an air pump for a 1972 GS Stage 1. The car apparently came equiped with one as the bracket is there, but no pump. Looks sort of funny without the pump on the car even though it will not be much help. Would anyone out there know where to locate one with all the proper connectors??

    Thanks

    Mike,
I believe the full size Buicks of the same vintage had the same pump, diverter valve, pulleys, hose, check valve, etc.
There's a chance I may have at least most of the parts to complete the set up.
I have an original 72 GS 350 4spd. convertible with everything intact that I could use as a reference to compare the parts to. The only difference I think on a 350 is the hose from the diverter valve to the check valve.

Tim's right, it'll be on most full-size buick of the same era. But im only certain of it coming on 1971-1973 Rivieras, im not certain about the other cars. Goodluck on your search :TU:

Thanks Tim and Rob for the info and Tim, if you do have the pump, please let me know as I am interested. I talked to Jim Lore last night and he indicated that Jim Weise might have a solution also so I plan on calling him today.

    Mike,
Can you take a few pictures of your engine compartment and we can see what you have and don't have for pieces needed to make it complete ?
Do you know if your car has the EGR set-up ? All '72 4 speed cars and CA emission automatics came with EGR.

As soon as it warms up a little bit I will dig through my parts to see what's here.

The car was delivered to Carnegie, PA so it did not have the Calif emmission controls EGR on it. The parts I need are the pump, diverter valve, hoses, clamps, long bracket, pulley, and the triangular piece that fits on the back of the pump. My car has the lower bracket that also has the PS pump on it. The intake has been plugged, but not sure what they did inside the intake. I have made contact with a gentleman that has most of the set up from a big block and is checking to see if it is correct for a 72 GS this weekend. If this does not work, then I will definitely get back in touch as I would at least like to do what Jim Weise did, put the pump in place and remove the vanes etc so it at least looks correct under the hood. Thanks again for the help. Will take a picture soon and post to get comments. Mike

    Mike,
There are 2 pulleys, one drive pulley located on the water pump, then of course the pump pulley. More than likely your drive pulley is still in place. But any 455 from 72-75 should be the same if you need one.

The triangular part on the back of the pump is the diverter valve.

More than likely they just covered the opening on the intake, and didn't plug the passages. This opening in the intake is where there should be a "stand pipe" with a check valve on it. The pipe is different between a 350 and 455. The hose runs between the check valve and the diverter valve, and is also different between a 350 and 455.

    Tim,

Thanks again for the info. I looked and the water pump pulley has 2 grooves, both of which were used. Does the air pump run off it's own belt or in combo with the power steering pump or does the water pump pulley have 3 grooves?
Have not found a good picture yet to show how this goes together. I do understand the valves now, thanks.

    Mike,
There is a separate single groove pulley for the AIR pump that mounts in front of the 2 groove pulley on the water pump.
So the AIR pump has it's own drive belt.
