Can,t decide, looked at every TA Cam 10 times.. Heres the new build 71 Motor- 38 over wiesco pistons Heads W/Stage1 valves and ported Stock intake, Heat pass. Blocked 800 Q-jet Shorty Headers and 2 1/2 exhaust Auto Trans, w/stock conv. may do small upgrade 2000-2200 Rear 308 12 bolt Power Brakes & Steering This car will be 99% street driven so I want a good idle.. But still would like to see at least 450hp from this combo :3gears: I,m Thinking TA212, TA284 or maybe TA288-94H o No:
I like the 118 cam.It has 118 lobe center that gives it smoother ideal but makes power 2200 stall will work fine.I know people who run this cam with low stall and stage1 valve springs and stock rockers with no problem.
a good idle and h.p is a thin line i like the the ta 212 but it may fall short hp and idle quality wise i like the schneider 290-10h 114 l/c, to make the h.p for you, but the idle may be the same as the 212 there are other sleeper cams out there that idle good, look for a 114 l/s or higher,115/118..but higher cyl pressure is recommended to perform at peak, like 10-1+ ken
If you want to make 450HP you will be going up a few notches in the Cam department and you will need an upgrade in the converter department if you really want to take advantage of the new cam. You dont have to go up in stall, I just dont think you would be as happy with the results. I also sent you a PM Thx Vinman
I was in your shoes a couple of weeks ago, I was wondering which one of those three cams you listed to choose even though I already bought the 212 but decided to go with the 288-94h, for this one you'll need the stage 1 springs but I guess you already read that on TA's website. I think it's a much better choice than a 212, not too much lift so it's fairly easy on the valvetrain and the power brand is still low so no need to rev into the 6k!! this is by no means an expert opinion so I might be wrong :spank:
I have read alot of good things about the TA212 but think its a little small. It is advertised as Good Idle.. This is the direction I am heading, a little larger lobe center for idle, a little more lift and duration for power.. Wish I knew what the hell I am talking about.. o No:
The biggest power maker is in the heads so concentrate on those first then worry about the cam second.:3gears:
Trust me, once your car's together it won't be long until you wish you had just a little more power. That said, I'd go with the 288-94. Very similar to my cam with a little wider lobe center for a smoother idle that should work better with your stock converter. Don't know if you'll make 450 hp though. My build is very close to yours and with full length headers and a b4b I made 449 at the crank. Never know though.
Do you want a good idle as in undetectable or a cam that will idle under 1000 rpms so it's more street friendly? I'm running TAs 288-84H and it's a nice streetable cam but will fry the tires with no problem. I can't post the idle sound on here but I could email it if you want to hear it. Bob H.
To get 450 HP out of a 455, you need a decent cam and set of heads. Not racetrack only, but decent. Ported iron stage 1 heads and the 288-94H or better. And once you do that, why in the world would you use a stock converter. You will NEVER see the benefit of all your work and $$$ with a stock converter, so then why do it at all?
He stated in his first post that he's willing to consider a converter upgrade. If so, he can consider something warmer than TA212. It's all a matter of the combo. Devon
I have kept going back to TA's 413 cam. I try others but end up liking the results of the 413. Good lope and requires a little more stall but I absolutely love that cam with a combo like yours.
What I.m looking for is a good steetable idle, a little lump is fine.. This car I drive alot in the summer and want to be able to jump right in and go... This is my thought exactly !! But with my 308 gears I know i will need moore converter, I,m thinking 2200-2400?? Here are the cam specs : Product ID: TA_288-94H 455H.504"-230'/.504"-240',114' Good street/strip cam. Sleeper type grind. 9.0:1 or more CR Yardley, I saw your 455 build tips on your site :TU:
If you compare the two they are very similar. 288-94h is milder Product ID: TA_288-94H 455H.504"-230'/.504"-240',114' Good street/strip cam. Gives 30 HP over stock cam. I run the 288-94h in my 65 and it has plenty of bottom end to fry the tires with even a 2:56 gear like I have ....I ran it with unported stage ones and now ta se's.... plenty of power and streetable.....it has enough vac for brakes and mine idles at around 775-825 ...here it is with manifolds in my 65..... it sounds choppy, 2.5 exhaust, x pipe, pypes race pro mufflers 2.5 inch http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2u8n9LWHl18 its probably a good ~425 hp cam with 10:1...... I dont think it is a solid choice for an easy 450 hp however ...I think you will need to be in the Ta413, or 290-08 range for that kind of power ..... everyone wants more cam (cowbell) after your build - human nature- so that being said if your sold on the 212 go for the 288-94h...The Scotty Brown Straightline performance cam gets rave reviews from everyone that buys it - it appears -so you may want to look at that over the 212 instead...kind of an in betweener grind. 212,S.B. 288
Ps I have heard a lot of people love that 113 cam......Scotty G. told me it was one of his milder favorites also.
