Can Anyone Identify This?

I have a TH400 which I shipped in from the US last February.

On the drivers side (US) there is a cable, not an electrical one but a steel braided cable.

I've looked in the ATSG and can't find it.

    What does it do?????

    Thanks

Sounds like either a speedometer cable or kickdown cable.

Speedo drive is off the output shaft, and I thought the TH400 was electrical kickdown??????

The one you want should have an electrical kickdown. Sounds like you might have been sent the wrong Transmission:Do No: How much does it cost to ship one of those things anyway?

    I shipped the TH400 and a 455 for under 200

The only steel braided cable on "our" driver side that I can think of may be remnants of a floor shift cable. Is it attached to a bracket bolted to the bottom pan?

Here's a picture of the cable.

It came straight out the side about halfway up and 2/3rds of the way from the front.

That is a THM350 detent (kickdown cable) It attaches on the passenger side front of the transmission. Where exactly was it attached? Can you show us a picture?

    Larry, Hi

This is a funny thing because I'm not convinced the cable was actually attached. I think it was just stuffed in a hole, like someone just thought it should be there.

I'll pull up a diagram later.

It was stuck in the hole just up and to the right of where the pressure gauge is connected in this picture.

I believe that is the factory lift point. They used a large "clamp" (like a giant pair of calipers) to pick the transmission up at that spot to hang it on the back of the engine. There should be another one just like it exactly on the other side. It is a "closed" hole (that is, it does not open into the inside of the trans).

Having said that, I believe the bottom of the kickdown cable was plugging the hole and the top part of the cable was stuffed in the lift point just for shipping.

I think someone is messing with you.

If the rear of your case looks like the one in the diagram, it's a TH-400. The cable is for a TH-350 or newer model with a TV cable. Certainly doesn't belong on a TH-400.

    Toss it!

Another easy way to identify it is by the shape of the oil pan.Totally different look between them both.1st is TH 350 2ND is TH400 pan.

    It's definately a TH400.

Larry ID'd it for me by using the serial number some time ago and the pan is definately a TH400.

Looks like someone just stuffed a detent cable in with it thinking I'd need it.

Got a question here. Can't tell from the picture, but just under the two transmission line fittings appears to be a drilled hole. :eek2: :eek2: :eek2:
It could just be some grinding on the case, but there is NOT supposed to be a hole there.
If there is a hole in the case there, I would strongly suggest that you remove the pan and check to see if there is some type of cable connection to the valve body or anywhere else. It is not stock by any means if there is.
This needs to be checked out before this trans is installed.

    Good Luck,
    Scott

Scott once you've seen this on the trans it's easy to see what it is in the photo.

The lower cooler line has the remnants of a steel pipe about 2" long on the end of which is a bit of rubber hose held on by a jubilee clip. That's what looks like the drilled hole.
