I got a 4bbl Q-jet that has been rebuilt. It starts up fine and runs good, but after it gets warmed up it will stall out when I slow down or come to a stop. It had the same problem before it was rebuilt. Can anybody Help Please!!
Hey Gurl! Kind of hard to help with specifics as we would need more info to get closer to the actual problem - BUT! Do you know it is a carb problem? What led you to rebuild yours? Is there a vacuum leak? If you don't have the correct carb to intake gasket, 99% chance of a vacuum leak. Is there a vacuum hose loose, possibly the PCV hose? Does it smoke once it is warmed up? Exhaust smell bad? Q-jets have a long history of leaking from well plugs underneath the carb. There are only a very few ways to fix these correctly and all involve removing the carb. Does it run hot once it warms up? When is the last time it had a tune-up and the ignition timing, etc. all set properly? Have you tried adjusting the idle speed? Is the carb restricted for air? I mean, how dirty is the air filter? Does the air cleaner housing sit too close to the top of the carb? Does the insulation from the hood hang down and plug the stock air filter housing? Any work done before it started to act like this? Did it just suddenly start this or gradually work up to this? Any other drivability problems? As you can see, there are lot's of reasons this could be stalling. Something as goofy as a dead alternator, weak battery and low voltage put a halt to the fun one night for me. Another time was a vacuum leak after working on the car with a "helper". ou: Phil
This is probably not the problem, but I once had a bad float cause a similar problem. The float was swollen and wedged in the bowl when it was full (keeping the needle valve closed)... just a thought.
So is it running good until it reaches temp, then dies until it cools down? Did you change the gas feed lines to where the fuel is getting too hot in the lines/carb and the fuel is "boiling"?
thanks for the help Well I rebuilt the carb because it was doing the same thing. But I wasn't measuring the float correctly. So I took back apart and fixed the float. Problem fix!!!! The reason I new it was the carb is because the only way I could get it started again was to put my hand over it (choke it) Or wait till it cooled down.
After reading your first post my initial thought was to make sure the float is new and set correctly but it figures....too late as usual!
the float was Way low Yeah when I measured it the first time I thought you just hold it down with your finger till its level then measure it. But i didnt know you push it just untill it seats that little needle. ou: Well that won't happen again!!! Again thanks for the help :TU:
