I took the GS out for a little romping about town and was dissapointed in its performance. infact i would go as far as saying it ran like Sh** if i gave it any throttle without easing into it it spluttered and almost died. over the course of the night it spat spluttered hesitated surged backfired and several other things that didnt make me very happy. it has never ran like this before. the car had sat for almost 15 years before i bought i have done alot of tune up things. i think my problem is carburetor related because i have my ignition sytem pretty well taken care of. so today i bought a carb rebuild kit for it and plan to either rebuild it myself or have it rebuilt. along with checking and adjusting the timing. do you guys reccomend rebuilding it myself or having someone rebuild it for me who can boil it out and go the extra mile on it? if i do attemp it myself what should i look for what are the tricks? what do you reccomend on timing? what other things (tuning) can i do at this point to upgrade my performance without any mods?
    thanks
    Tucker

I was amazed at how f'd up the heads were on mine when I pulled it apart. If I pulled off the rockers and laid a strait edge across the valves there was as much as 1/4 " difference. It idled OK but sounded like firecrackers in the intake at WOT..

The best book for q-jet tuning is, How to Rebuild and Modify Rochester Quadrajet Carburetors by Cliff Ruggles. This book has helped me out a ton, my qjet is running like a champ. I recommend reading the book and rebuilding it your self. If its sputtering and almost dieing then it sounds like your pulloff is bad. I had the same issue.

Those are the best sights for buying qjet parts.

Power time you buick like larry suggested. If the problem persists, buy Cliff Ruggles book (best carb investment ive made!) and a new pulloff.

    Hope this helps.
