Holley input- Carb Set-Up Guidence (******* 950 DP)

Well, I finally did it; I called the Holley tech line and asked what a good starting point was, as far as idle speed (throttle opening/exposure of transfer slots) and idle mix is for the Holley 950 cfm Ultra HP carb. I assume that the Ultra HP model closely approximates my asterisk 950 carb as far as design intent and operation goes.

Heres what the tech rep came up with:

Adjust both the primary and secondary plates such that the bottom ends of all four transfer slots are barely exposed. I asked if he meant the exposed portion of each slot should look like a square hole (like "sailbird" said), and he said yes.

When adjusting idle speed, adjust both the primary and secondary idle speed screw the same amount.

The starting point for the idle mix screws should be 1& turns out from the seated position.

Adjust all four idle mix screws equally to get the highest vacuum reading.

    That was it!

In my particular case, it appears as though something other than the carb is giving me grief. So, next step is to troubleshoot the ignition system as a whole, and then its on to valve adjustment and proper installation/operation of the valve train in general.

Yes, my conscience bothers me since I used Holley time and money to help me with a knock-off carb. However, I was able to justify it by telling myself that its OK, since I will soon buy two Holley 4160 carbs for the Offy 2x4 manifold thats going on the 455 engine destined for my 72 Skylark.

    Thanks for your input, everyone.
