Just put a professionally rebuilt Quadrajet on my 71 GS. I am having no luck getting the car to idle. Once moving, it seems to drive and respond fairly well. Can someone tell me where the vacuum line from the fuel vapor canister is supposed to connect? I have been told a port on the bottom of the carb, and others say it belongs on the air cleaner assembly. Second issue is when I come off the gas, the carb hangs up for a few seconds before it snaps back to the idle position. This is a 455 with a TH400 trans. I had an electric choke put on the new rebuilt carb. I picked up a vacuum gauge yesterday and will try again to adjust the mixture screws in a day or two. Thanks in advance.

Define "professionally", and define "rebuilt". A high-school kid can rebuild a carb. Recalibrating it is another story. Were the jets and restrictions and air-bleeds dicked-with?

Did you adjust the idle mixture screws? If so, HOW did you do it? Have you run a cylinder-balance test to see if all eight cylinders are running properly?

Were the throttle shafts re-bushed? Are the throttle return springs connected where they're supposed to be? Is there an idle solenoid or idle dashpot?

Where is that located--on the intake manifold, or on the side of the carb? What kind of choke did the vehicle come with?

Is this the original carb, modified--or a different carb?

That info will be in your service manual.

Very little on my car is original. Heads and original carb are from a 70 Riviera, block is a later low compression model. Not sure of year.

Any idea on where the vapor canister should be connected?

    Thanks

The vacuum line for the charcoal canister goes on the port on the lower right hand side of the front of the carburetor base below the fuel line.

That is where I have it connected. Is there a check valve or anything in the canister? It is like an open vacuum leak. Thanks for the response.

Block the canister hose then plug it back up, turn idle mixture all the way in then out 2.5 turns, turn the idle speed all the way out then in till it pushes back on the arm about an 1/8 in. Leave choke unplugged set the idle mix and speed from there. Make sure the gasket isn't hitting the throttle blades, make sure the return spring isn't too weak,..go from there

I hope you don’t have the canister connected to the PCV connection on the base plate. All that canister does is absorb fuel vapor, it’s an emissions device. It DOES NOT get vacuum. A 1970 carburetor should not have a connection for a vapor canister AFAIK. If you have the canister connected to PCV vacuum, the engine will never idle because that will make a huge vacuum leak. For all intents and purposes, that canister is USELESS. It will have no bearing on how the engine runs.

On a ‘71, the hose from the canister connects to the port on the carb just below and slightly to the right of the fuel inlet connection on the front of the carb. Ported vacuum is further right and higher up. As Larry said, do not connect that hose to ported vacuum.

You should be talking to them about why this thing doesn't run right.

I have no idea how they can install an electric choke on the side of the carb without replacing the main body of the carb. A divorced-choke carb isn't set up for an electric choke housing on the side.

    Photos might be helpful.

You need a service manual for this vehicle.

There are actually choke conversion kits without having to swap the main body of the carb. I know Everyday Performance provides their own

I know a 71 carburetor has a connection for the canister on the carburetor, but he is using a 1970 carburetor. I don’t believe they had a connection unless it is a California car carburetor?

Just leave the canister hose disconnected and see if it improves. As was stated, it isn't necessary.

California car will have the canister; yes it can be a vacuum leak source.
