Hey guys, I did some work to a 1954 GMC truck awhile back. After i worked on it, it sat at the owners house for close to 3 years, with being started but a few time. I have recenlty replaced the fuel pump, it had crud in it and smelled of old gas. Got it running well, and then it sat for another 6 months. Now it is running like doo-doo again, and the carb I rebuilt is full of grey goo. It has a fuel filter before the fuel pump, and another before the carb. Where is the grey goo coming from? Is it because I didn't get the carb clean enough before I rebuilt it a few years back? Does anyone know where to get one of these? Or, a place that can hot tank rebuild?
Methinks the gas is old and contaminated, the filters are clogged and the carb is fine. Can you provide a substitute fuel supply and bypass all the conatminated stuff to test the carb?
Modern gas doesn't age well; I would have to agree with the post above, it sounds like crappy gas and decomposing diaphrams. I'm assuming it's an old W-1 on a 235 6cylinder motor. This application pretty much interchanges with the Rochester GC that was also available starting in 1950. If you give up on the Carter, try the GC; should almost bolt right up. Those old Carters ran forever, and would seldom wear out. However, they would weld themselves to the bakelite spacer plates used on those 6 cyl manifolds and either warp or crack them. They also ate throttleshaft bushings, - another vacuum leak source. That might be the next step, - start looking for a vacuum leak.
I actually found a NOS carb for it on another forum. The person I bought it from is also a member on V8 Buick! I had to use some copper tube for the thermo choke to function.... but it seems to work well.
