Center AC Duct Seals

My wife has been complaining that she does not feel any air coming from the passenger AC vent. I finally decided to check out the problem. I found that the AC vent hose was partially filled with under dash insulation. Probably from the few years that the cars sat in a barn and the mice wanted a cool place to stay. At any rate, this has prompted me to replace all my dry roted AC duct hoses. I read GStage1's post about using Motormite as a replacement the hoses and plan to do that.

However, is anyone making reproduction seals for the center AC duct? There is a seal where the hard plastic duct connects to the AC distributor and another seal where the center duct connects to the center dash vent. Any ideas on where to find replacements?

    Thanks

I will bet you money that if there was insulation in the ducts that the heater core also has a wad there as well. Mice seem to just love packing insulation next to the heater core.Have seen it many, many times. On my 72 GS I lost all heat. I chased everything from hoses to thermostat.Th last resort was to remove the under dash portion of the heater box and upon removal,I found a thoroughly packed heater core nice and warm..Just something to consider.

Thanks for the reply. I'll be sure to check the heater as well. I bought the car last October and it went straight to the body shop over the winter. I haven't had to use the heat yet, so I be sure to look at that.

    Thanks again for the tip.

    GStage1 Always looking for parts!

No need for the upper center vent to have the little rubber seal....doesn't seal much...all the air will flow thru the vent.

As for center vent to distribution box.....go to Home Depot and use door weatherstrip with adhesive on it....I believe it is 3/8 or 7/16"....make one wrap around the vent and then insert it ..... takes a little effort but works well.

Ames perormance Pontiac makes the correct material tar/cloth type AC ducts in the correct diameter. I think it is 2.75". Much better than that plastic stuff. I would also take apart your entire vent system and clean it real well. That mouse turd smell/bacteria can't be healthy.

George, thanks for the tip on using door weatherstripping as a seal for the center duct.

Dave, I do plan to do a good inspection of the whole vent system. Beleive it or not, the car does not have any bad odors. Other than insulation being in the passenger duct hose, I haven't seen any other signs of rodant problems such as nawed wires, etc.

    Thanks again -- Larry
