    Asm manuals?

They don't list #'s in that manner, only parts books from what I have seen.

Duane, assuming the chrome covers used the same # as the standard covers, how then could they differenciate between a stage 1 engine going in a GS & the same in the Riv? From what I have heard & read, the Riv got the chrome lid, but GS's did not, but there is no engine order # or sales code difference from what I recall. :Do No:

Did GM do the chrome plating in house, or use a vendor? :Do No:

There are listed in the Master Parts Cat. under Group 0.386.

    Guys,
First, I want to apologize for taking over John's thread.

The assembly manuals do have many part numbers, however the engines were delivered to the assembly plants as a completed sub-assembly. They had a paper sticker, on the driverside valve cover, that differentiated them for engine size, trans type, AC vs non-Ac, Calif vs non-Calif etc. (These letter codes differ from the codes stamped on the block.) So the engine components would not be listed seperately in an assembly manual.

As far as the Air cleaners go, Rivs were built in plant #40 in Flint, GS's were built in plant #4 in Flint, I don't think there would be a mix-up.

I don't have a 70 Master parts Catalogue, but I did look up the info in Dove's black book this morning. It has a list from a service bulletin for Stage 1 components. If you look up that page it lists the valve cover numbers as ---422, and ---423. It also lists a 70 Stage 1 carb with an incorrect number. Again these were the numbers you needed to order service parts. They had nothing to do with the numbers stamped on the parts. Those "ordering" numbers have no meaning anymore, because you can't use them to buy parts that GM no longer has in stock.

The best way to go is to use the assembly manuals, and if there is a question, see what numbers are on the actual parts on the cars. Those part books can get you in trouble.

I remember guys in the late 80's selling correct Stage 1 carbs & distributers because they thought they had the wrong parts, after using the parts books as references.

    The part number agony continues.

Duane so you think the casting numbers should be let off?

    John,
    In a word, YES.

If I were making them I would leave all the numbers off. Why make something incorrect for everyone, and take a chance of limiting your sales.

I would even go I step further, offer two varieties, (1) bare steel and/or painted, and (2) chromed.

This way if someone wanted to stamp their own, they could get them chromed or painted later.

Either way they would have a nice non-pitted valve cover to start with. And your sales would increase.

Any chance these will come in a "Taller Version" to fit engines running Roller Rockers ? ?

Here's a picture of some factory ones I had "stretched" to clear roller rockers. It wouldn't take much, maybe have to add 3/8 of an inch plus or minus.

Image shows factory Valve covers with Roller Rockers:

In response to Toddgs about taller covers: I asked the vendor but that means another staping which means more money that he doesn't see profitable right now. He did say he can make a spacer but I believe TA has that already.

    Why not try a poll???

I think most people would prefer taller covers over the short originals! Well, at least I'd only be interested in the taller.:Do No: I don't think very many people would even notice they are taller once they are installed. They are not NOS, and can never be, so why not make them to cover roller rockers (the way they should have been)???:Dou:

I also think it would not be wise to ship any bare steel from over seas. They will need some serious rust protection during transit.

    Dan,
I think there is a federal law somewhere that requires all metal parts to be painted or plated before they are shipped overseas.

That's an easy way to tell if your parts were made overseas or not. If the parts are bare metal, they are domestic.
