Looking for new replacements for these '70-72 A body convertible top boot snap studs. The originals are MACHINE THREADS (and #8 size). I see a lot of "replacement" types that use a coarse sheet metal pointed tip thread but would like to use original style if possible. ANYONE KNOW WHO HAS THEM IN THIS VERSION??? >Checked with C.A.R.S....no dice >Mr. G's - shows them in catalog but not available there >Restoration Specialty & Supply...nope >AMK - don't see them in their catalog Please respond if YOU HAVE ACTUALLY FOUND THEM IN THIS STYLE (#8 Machine Thread original version) at a specific source. Thanks very much.
I am looking for these as well. I saw some that looked right in the Ames catalog, but not sure. I need 4. Since I purchased the interior & boot from Legendary, I thought they would have been installed with the interior or as least included.
Auveco's catalog doesn't show these in a #8 size...only #10 which is too large. They do show them with the COARSE sheet metal cutting type threads in a #8 size but I am trying to find the machine thread version like the originals. EDIT: I just checked my Ames catalog and it looks like they have them..item #H107C. I'll call tomorrow and verify they are #8. They appear to have a regular slotted screwdriver slot instead of the original style phillips slot but that'll work. STEVE: Do you want me to order an extra set and send them your way to save you on having to pay shipping on one small item from Ames??? I have some other items I need to order from them. GEORGE: If the local trim shop has them in #8 machine thread w/the phillips screwdriver slot go buy all they have as that combo appears hard to find. Thanks
I was searching the web for the same thing for my Chevelle 'vert and I found something that is almost exactly like the original at Mcmaster Carr in the fabric snaps section of the catalog-18-8 Stainless Steel 8-32 X 1/2" Machine Screw. It is 1/8" too long but can always be trimmed since it is stainless. Even has the correct phillips head machine screw. I have ordered some so I'll let you know how they work. Couldn't post the link due to my recent registration-sorry.
clm69z28 & Ian...Thanks!! I've bought items from MCM Carr before and for some reason it didn't cross my mind to check thereou: ....excellent. I'll likely order some from there as they are reasonable. Again, thanks for the info and I will also report back with whatever I get and post some good close up detailed pics of the original and the replacements. I doubt any trimming will be needed as I think the hole/nut for these is open on both ends and the area in there has plenty of room with no possibility of a slightly longer screw/bolt interfering with anything else. The backside is also hidden by a cover that goes on the top of this convertible part anyway. :TU:
Follow up on the snaps from Mcmaster: needless to say, what I recieved from them were not the same as the picture in their catalog. The snap had the flange unlike the catalog picture, but did have the phillips machine screw as the original. Anyway, I ground them down to the 3/8" length and they worked fine, and look good too. Nice to have a stainless part instead of the old chrome plating that rusted and pitted. So your choice is the wrong flange and the correct macine screw, or the correct snap and the slot head machine screw. Welcome to restoration!
