Ed, I spent some time a few years ago looking at the top switches. They can be taken apart with no issues, contacts cleaned up, etc. Basically the same as the rear defog switch except they are spring loaded, and pins are different. I seem to recall the internals were the same as the rear defog switch and could be swapped (ie, there are LOTS of rear defog switches out there to use for parts).

If you take one apart, do it over a large piece of paper so any parts you drop can be seen easier, they are tiny!!

One of the reasons I went with a relay setup on my car that looking at the switch and the current that GM ran throuhg it, it is amazing they don't burn up faster than they do. The relays put all the current through large feeders and the switch only does the signal.

Its been a while....use info at your own risk!

ok,this is what i did, following timr advice,i took the switch out which is very easy.it comes apart with two clips.contacts cleaned up.i used a light grit sand paper until all of the scoring was gone.then i used lots of dielectric grease on the poles and the contacts,as tim said alot of voltage goes through these parts and the dielectric grease will help things from burning up.i put the switch back in and it works.now i have to lower and raise the top to see if i get a full cycling out of it.before it would stop mid way and i had to wait until it would start going again to fully raise or lower the top.hope this helps......................... :beer
