Convertor issues

Guys, I am in the process of replacing the flywheel on my 72 GS 455, and I have run into an issue. The car has a 10 inch convertor of unknown origin, and it does not sit correctly on the flywheel. Both the original flywheel and my new replacement units are the same, so its a convertor issue. The smaller convertor's mounting pads do not clear the weight on the flywheel. The last person just bolted the thing in like that and let it go. The original flywheel is clearly pulled and distorted due to the convertor leg resting on the weight, not next to it. The legs on this thing are the same on all three sides, so it is not a case of indexing to fit the flywheel. I imagine that this is some sort of semi universal deal that someone threw in because he had it laying around. I am not about to duplicate this, and need to do it right. Am I looking for another convertor? Should I trim the leg on the one I have? I don't think so. The weight is welded on the end, so trimming it is out of the question, too. What gives? Thanks, Rudy E

Just fyi, the convertor in my car is a multi fit 10 inch unit from ? It uses either the small or large bolt patterns, and plenty of them are like this. The problem is that the wider, dual pattern feet will not fit either hole pattern on the flexplate without overlapping the factory weight on the Buick flywheel. The plate is drilled for either small or large patterns, too, to accomodate either style convertor. This one came with my car, and the last owner just bolted it down without checking this out. That would explain the chipped teeth on the old flywheel and questionable starter engagement, as the thin flywheel was warped from having the bolts tightened down over this uneven surface. I am going to replace the convertor with a new one, but I thought that I would pass this along in case anyone else was looking to buy a convertor. The multi fit units may not fit if they are drilled for both hole patterns. Use caution, less you end up with an unusable piece. Thanks, Rudy E
