I have a 1971 Skylark Custom convertible and have been searching for photos of correct placement of underhood decals. I can't seem to find any. Could anyone help me. The car has a 350 4bbl. no air, ps. pb. auto, . THANKS!!!

You should have the emissions decal slapped rather randomly in the center of the radiator support top plate. There may have been a decal on the front of the driver's side valve cover with a two-letter code, but I'm not sure for your application. I think that's it.

    Couple more...
"Keep Your GM Car All GM" on the passenger side of the air cleaner. Technically, this decal should have fine print that is specific to a 1971 Buick 350-4. If that is not reproduced, you can get away with close enough.
I think the air cleaner lid will have the semi-circular red "350-4" decal.
Do not fall into the trap of Year One, etc, telling you what all decals you should have. They just want to sell lots of decals.

Unfortunatley the trap has been set by the sellers and now many think all have are supposed BH on the keep it GM (rather thier actual Engine code or stage 1 rather than engine code on emissions , and GM mark of excellence on both doors when most never had them at all (those that did Pre 68 I think were only drivers door - but watch Barret Jackson every thing seems to have them on passenger door )-- Many being are for wrong year with the wrong part numbers or drawing. Took me 2 tries to get a proper emissions for my riv first one - even though I gave them the part number from my original (JIm Osborne still came as stage1 - 3 Ebay tries for jack instruction first didn't have part number at all - second did (the right one to) but the drawing had a 72 - third was correct with 71 riv in drawing. (and yes I got sucked into buying GM mark of excellence decals but found out they didn't belong before i anded up sticking them on )

Another incorrect decal I always see is that cooling info decal people put on the radiator cover. I do not know what that was for but I never saw one on an original car.

There are quite a few decals under the hood of our cars.................................................but.................................some of the guys go hog wild with them and find the error of their ways on the Show field, where we deduct points for things not original to the car. There is a well know organization out there that sells our cars and is notorious for loading up the cars with decals.

So for the people building show vehicles, please be very careful of car pictures shown on the internet, because some of them are very incorrect.

Beware the "PP Keep your GM car all GM" air cleaner decal. Many out there. None correct for a Buick. I think it is a Pontiac decal but many vendors continue to sell it for Buicks and do not seem to care it is not correct.

    Dave,
The first letter designates the Make, ie P-Pontiac, B-Buick....................that's why ours are "BA", "BC", etc.

Late build '71 cars had 2 decals on the rad. cover. Emissions as per any other + the adjustment decal for the idle solenoid.
Believe there may also be an order/sequence to these as well.

and even those differ depending on your application- Steve sent me one of these from a NOS solenoid kit he had the other I did up using his and what was left of my original (06 jun build date riv) and i sent them to Osborne Reproductions (were i got most my incorrect ones- they replied they were not interested in reproducing these as they couldn't sell enough to make it worth their while.

these in in response to placement thread - on my Riv they were placed like in the 2nd photo - I think the first was on some elses car or dry fitted as this way or this way - some one I think Duane had a few reproductions left back then. I didn't pay much attention as they for stage ! and A body

    Dave,
    "P"- works for Pontiac &
    "B"- works for Buick,
but what does "C" stand for Chevy or Cadillac???????

I never said this worked for everything, but it does for us, within our time frame.

Oh, and stop picking on my Oldsmobiles.:laugh::laugh:

I have often wondered about the cooling decal and its proper placement. If you look carefully at an original coolant overflow tank you will notice a very faint raised outline on the top, in the exact size and shape as the coolant decal. Kind of makes sense that the coolant decal would go there.

This faint outline is not on the repro tank lids, which also makes it easy to distinguish a repro from an original.

    Anyone else notice this?

    Cheers
    Randy

Randy, I have always noticed that as well and thought that as well but I have never even seen a trace of a decal on any original or junkyard car so I do not think they used it.,,,Duane it was damn hot in that closet.

Not to mention it does not appear in any factory or contemporary road test photos...
