Cowl Tag - black or clean?

I'm restoring a 70 skylark (non GS), and see the cowl tag is (painted) black, blending in with the paint they must have used to spray the engine bay I assume.

My question is - How would it have come from the factory? Not sure if I should clean (scrub) the tag so that it's polished or not, thus removing the black paint. Any set standard?

I hear there may have been a thread on this in the past, but can't locate. Can somebody assist?

Depends on the plant where it was built. Flint was bare metal with some small amount of masking/overspray.

I left mine bare after paint stripper! replaced it back on chassis black firewall. Not supposed to be bare and beautiful! over restored.could have painted it but the few times I went to salvage yards the tags on cars the paint would come of just the tags because of exposure to the weather.
