Now the dilemma..have it rebuilt with some heavy duty parts, or just buy a built TH400. Was planning on doing a 470 motor this winter..possibly a 482. Any thoughts on a 700R4 being able to handle 550-600hp reliably?

I would have it rebuilt with good parts. Giving up the overdrive gear would suck in my opinion. Plus the car is setup for the 700 already.

I have much success with all my 200-R4 tranny's
    Go to California Performance Transmission.com
Art Carr builds 1000hp trans. They bolt right up
to our engines. A good article on Hot Rod.com
How to Build a TH200R4 trans for Drag racing.
    Good Luck.

not to mention to swap the a th400 you will need another drive shaft move the crossmember again all that. plus if you have deep gears thats going to suck.

well, after research and talking to a local tranny guy, I'm going to go with a built Turbo 400. I'll miss the OD, but it seems like a bulletproof 700R4 isn't a common thing.

Are you going to race it regularly and generally thrash it? If so, I'd go with a Turbo 400. If you are going to do an occasional 1/4 mile blast, check out a hearty Turbo 200-4R. They can handle a lot of power if done properly and they have better gear spacing.

I would find a different builder. It’s not hard to make a 700 handle 500 HP.

I'm sure my car's future will be more and more drag strip action. I know a 400 is the strongest out there, so making the change with future power upgrades in the future.

You could go with a 4L80E, or the route I took 15 years ago, a Gear Vendors Overdrive. They are rated to 1200 HP.

Ordered a custom built Turbo 400 that should be rated for 900 HP. Can’t wait to feel the difference. I hated how the 700 shifted!
