Dash pot or no dash pot

    I have an original 455 in a 70 wildcat.

I do not have the dash pot nor the original brackets after I sent the carb to be redone. no idea what happened to it. I have read on other posts that it is possible i may not require these parts for the vehicle to operate normaly.

Would it be easier to locate another one, with the brackets, or to modify the linkage to go without it. i was not aware you could go without it although I should have gotten the clue when the part is no longer availabe (ie vacuum solenoid).

    Suggestons please?

would switching to a soft linkage (cable) fromt he original hard linkage make this easier.

    Thanks,

You can still get the dash pots from CARS, and if you put a thread out on parts wanted I bet you can find someone with a bracket they'll sell. I would try to put one on the car, it'll prevent throttle lift off stalling.....

What is CARS? Sorry, but I am new to this game. Did google search and only the used car site comes up.

Google cars New Jersey Buick + they will come up. They are a company that sells Buick parts. Their line may be down or busy, they were hit hard from "Sandy" + said they were having difficulties. They should be up + running now or soon.

The rebuilder should have sent the parts back on the carb or at least an explanation of why they were left off. Return to idle can be harsh sometimes, and the engine may stall. The dashpot reduces this tendency. Automotive engineers stay up at night trying to make cars that can satisfy all people and government regulations, and some people just leave the parts off. Go figure.

Yup...Steeveedee hit it right on the head! Sure, your car will run without it, it may run ok most of the time w/o it. It allows you to set the idle lower, among other things. Maybe one day you make a panic stop, the carb linkage snaps back too fast because the dashpot is not there to cushion the throttle and the car stalls. Now you need to swerve after your panic stop and your car is dead. Get it? If you are racing no...you probably don't need it, it's extra weight, you can turn up the idle. But...yeah...GM engineers worked hard designing it, how much do you think it cost GM for each bracket, nut + dashpot in say 1970....75 cents - 1.00? Think of how many cars they made and how much $$$ they would have saved not using it. I have a 70 GS I bought on coming today (I hope). I know this car will be missing the plug wire holders, the harness gutter, probably the dashpot, probably the TCS solenoid, probably the ported vacuum switch and a million other small parts. They are all there for a reason, I'll fix them. There ARE parts you can toss, like the engine strap used for assembly. It was used for assembly only you don't need it. But it also may have been used for a washer, so if you toss it you need a washer. If it was there, GM put it there for a reason + it did something! If you understand what the part does then MAYBE you can toss it w/o consequences.

I just had the same question, my '62 215 with 4gc had no dash pot on it and i didn't know what they were for ( still not totally sure) and if i needed it. I got one out of a junk yard just in case. What's inside them and are they rebuildable/ do they need to be rebuilt as i don't know the condition of mine. I'll find it and check i'ts movement and look at the manual, but is there anything i should look for.
    Thanks, rick

regarding CARS inc (oldbuickparts.com), they are apparently back on track 100% as of last week. I got my order in no time

The dashpots are not rebuildable. Of course, anything CAN be rebuilt, it's just not practical to do it. I think there is a rubber diaphram and spring inside. I assume the rubber cracks or splits from age or heat, then you lose the cushioning affect on it rendering it useless.

Can't comment on how to live without it but I can tell you they work. Had two embarrassing moments many moons ago having to lift suddenly and a dead car in the road. Starter noises are never so loud as when you have an audience.

Thank you everyone for your help. I dont remember if the bracket went with the motor or not to be honest. This is a car that was dis-assembled 12 years ago and the motor was rebuilt in maybe 2006

I was able to locate the dash pots, but just have to find the bracket and associated parts.

Thank you for clarifying CARS, err oldbuickparts.com. If anyone has that bracket let me know but I will start the search in the meantime.
