I decided to make a new thread for this, so not to clutter up Joe's excellent thread.

When I first took my tranny to the rebuilder, he dissassembled it right before my eyes. Pretty much followed the same order as Joe did. Well, when he got to the point of the plastic washer, it was not there. He then told me that there was supposed to be a plastic washer where he pointed. It was not there. There was no trace of the washer being there. We didnt even find pieces or bits of it in the transmission. Where the plastic washer was supposed to be, the 2 metal pieces had rubbed together, and you could see wear in the metal from where the washer was supposed to be. He machined the lip down, that was created from the washer not being there. He dug around his parts bin and found a new plastic washer that measured out to be slightly larger on thickness to make up for the small amount that was machined away. He said that it looked like a factory goof up. Especially seeing as how my car only has 25k miles on it. Maybe someone else has been into the tranny before. I dunno. I just remembered this when dcm422 mentioned the plastic washer.

    Brian,
I have not personally seen that washer missing, but who knows. The non plastic ones (phenolic if spelling is correct) could possibly disintegrate and get caught in the filter. It could even wear away over 40 years despite the 25K miles. Much of the reason it was replaced by plastic.
What I did want to ask you was about your thread on the trans' being fixed.
He told you it was an internal vacuum adjustment.
No such thing that I am aware of. Hate to say it, but I think he is giving you a made up story to cover something he did wrong.
At any rate, as long as it is fixed now and running fine, it is no big deal.
    Glad things worked out.

Yea, ive never read anything about an internal vacuum adjustment either. Maybe I misunderstood him, but im pretty sure thats what he said. I checked all the vacuum on the outside and everything was great. But yea, no big deal now since its fixed. It shifts perfect. Each gear is solid. He told me if I ever had any problems with it, to give him a call or come by his house. He was pretty cool about everything when I went and picked the car up after it was re-fixed, and even invited me to go out to a track with him while he races his TT-Camaro.

    Thanks for the help.
