Not sure what kind I should go with... Im going from the old points to somethin newer, I was thinking HEI but when I put it in, the distributer is so big it looks so stupid... so should I go with somethin Pertronics or Uni-Light conversion kit? or? Any suggestions? (Appx 440 Horse 455-Street) Also, the carb that the guy had on it when I bought it was a 600 CFM DP so I quickly ran the number and found that it was a 600 and pulled that off, will my 750 vacuum secondary with electric choke work as well as I need it to just for the street? Or should I go a bit larger? Im not sure the cam, the exhaust leak was a bit too large to be able to tell if it had a bit of a rumble or not. Thanks again.

Have your points distributor converted, call Daves Small Body HEI, he goes by "IgnitionMan" here on the board. He's in Thousand Oaks, just down the road from you. Worth every dime, lots of guys here on the board run his stuff.

Have you points dist converted to HEI

Or MSD (depending on the money you want to spend). Many guys on the board have had Dave Ray do theirs. They look like stock. HEI costs about $175 + a new coil maybe $30 more.

Uni-lite conversion, get one for $100 bucks, never look back. Just make sure all charging system, conections are 100%, and good grounds are important too........

You'll regret the Uni-Lite when the module takes a dump twenty miles from nowhere and you can't get another one locally.

I've seen too many Uni-lites fail.

Buy something that you can get parts for ANYWHERE. Even a Small-Body HEI uses standard parts.

455s like 850+ cfm carbs. Even Buick knew that and went with 800 cfm Q-Jets in 1971 or 72. 1000 ThermoQuads are run on many race motors around here.

Your 750 will work fine for now, but it will be holding you back overall.

Thanks for the pics, that one is a small body HEI. If one imagines no module bolted to the bottom of the body, and two wires with the black plug on them, you'd have one of my MSD trigger only conversions.

Also, please don't malign the Mallory Unilite, it is my drop-in conversion pick over all others, any day of the week, and especially over three junkers out there, PerSputter, M&H and Crane XRi.

Most people don't resist the Unilite correctly and end up with problems with them later on down the road. Uniltes come with a resistor in the package with them, to be used in conjunction with the stock resistance the vehicle has, to further lower the Unilite ops volts to between 7.50 and 9.50.

Wire them as such, stock resistor/resistor wire to stock coil, then bridge wire the Mallory resistor to the coil + termial, then the red Unilite power wire to the second resistor, output side, and you should end up with a Unilite that will live long.

When I spin a Unilite on one of my distributor machines, I use the 6 volt battery that powers the guages in the machines, no problem great pattern. Mallory states to use a 9 volt dry lantern battery to power them off the engine and on distributor machines for testing/curving.

They also like .032 plug gaps, .035 if you are brave, stock GM coils (they don't have the electronic drivers in them to drive anything more than a points level spark, no matter the coil used), and nice magnetic suppression, spiral or magna core wires. I've had people tun them 25 years set up this way, and just one failure, traced to a plug wire that had come off the plug, overloading the coil and Unilite.

Nope, Unilite ain't bad if that very near stock points output level performance is all you want, but set it up correctly. I wouldn't use one to trigger an MSD/Crane unit, that is jsut not good sense, a dedicated MSD magnetic pickup is the best way, either in the MSD dists or one of my conversions, as I use the MSD 8466-1 billit dist pickups in ALL my conversions, MSD and/or HEI.

Thier complete stand alone magnetic ignition system is to be avioded, failure rates higher then mis-applied Uniltes.

    Distributer help

Thanks for your replies guys, they have been most helpful, I tried the new Pertronics Intimidator II or whatever the hell it is, piece of sh**. Dont use it, doesnt work. Didnt try UniLite but I did jus play with the old points (Going to ignitionMan soon :p) ---The vid I wanted to put on here doesn't work? But I just wanted to have you all listen and tell me what you think =/ anyways, thanks a BUNCH for your help guys.
