Do I Need the Muffler in My New AC System

I'm putting all new AC parts on my 71 GS and using a pro6Ten compressor. My question is, do I need to keep the muffler that's mounted to the inside fenderwell? Also, I want to replace my hoses but replacements seem very pricey. The fittings are available from Old Air (and maybe others) and I could buy hose and crimp them myself, but am a little leery of something I've never done. Wondering if anyone has done this and what the pitfalls might be?

The muffler was added to dampen pulses from the compressor that could lead to resonant noise in the interior. I don't think that would be an issue with the Sanden based Pro6Ten. (Good choice, BTW.)

As far as the lines, why not have your original lines rebuilt? Classic Auto Air in Florida does nice work, as do a few other places. That's another good option.
Building new lines is good if you want to reroute the lines and clean up the engine compartment, but the cost can be as much or more as new line sets.

Thanks for the info. I think I'll leave it off, then.
