Preferred paint is Duplicolor DH1608 has been out of production for some time, you wont find it anywhere, unless you run into some old stock or something. Krylon 2114 is 300 paint, don't waste your money, my heads turned black after one heat cycle. Krylon KO2114 is 500 so try to find that part number. Seems readily available online, Amazon has it for about $6 a can. I just recently found a company, USA made, that has 980 2 part epoxy paint. They sent me a sample of the RED and it is very very close to the Krylon that has not discolored on my motor now. But its expensive. $49 / kit for a 4cyl motor and a V8 will take 2 kits. It can be sprayed too with proper nozzle size and once mixed you have to use it all or loose it. http://www.g2usa.com/product/G45.html You can order a color sample swatch for free on their site. When I pull my motor I may use this.. but then again, I have a couple of cans of the Duplicolor sitting on the shelf just waiting to be used :Smarty:
Someone also suggested Duplicolor "Plain" red or red, and possibly even ford red are passable to most untrained Buick eyes. Though probally not recomended for a Concourse resto.
I see that those are rustoleum colors do they differ any from the Duplicolor tint/shade? How close do you think the plain red is to "Buick Red"?
I cant say, the Autozone and Advance near me do not have high heat duplicolor in any color. The only duplicolor they have are factory paint matched colors for body panels.
Try Duplicolor de 1653 500* ceramic I sprayed it over 1608 and the color is good.Pep boys has it The Wizard found it. <a href="http://s38.photobucket.com/albums/e132/buickgrandsport/?action=view&current=100_4843_zps87e361df.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e132/buickgrandsport/100_4843_zps87e361df.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a> <br/><br/> </center>
yea, the local NAPA by me seems to stock mostly Duplicolor and a small selection of Rustoleum. No plain reds though, just Dodge, Chevy, ford, etc....
Bill Hirsch paints -- buy it by the pint/quart or in an aerosol. http://www.hirschauto.com/prodinfo.asp?number=EEA-SPRAY&variation=BUI RED LT
I think there have been more threads regarding Buick Red engine paint over the years than any other subject on this board.
I agree. I just painted my motor with their paint and it is too pinkish. I have one last 1608 paint bomb I may top coat with before I install.
The Krylon stuff is discontinued too! Not on there website and all the local stores have Rustoleum everywhere! I really wish Plasticote made a Buick Red! Mitch
Bill Hirsch has great engine paint. 37.00 for a quart and it is good to 700 degrees. I haved used it with good results. http://www.hirschauto.com/prodinfo.asp?number=EE-QUART
JNW Engine balanced/blueprinted my 430, then painted it Chevy orange. :{ Well, what the hay. At least it runs very nicely.
"Balancing/blueprinting" requires such attention to detail..to me there is just something wrong with providing that type of work and then saying hey....Chevy Orange is close enough. I don't have a problem with Chevy orange but it belongs on a Chevy engine
I just finished painting my engine and used the CARS red. Like others mentioned it's a bit pinkish. Definately lightler than Krylon and I had a WTF moment once the paint dried. I was so convinced it was the wrong stuff that I took one of my valve covers over to Then & Now to get their opinion. According to them CARS is the "most correct" color. Now that I've got all the accessories reinstalled on the engine the color actually looks acceptable. Also, I went with the CARS paint because I couldn't find the correct Krylon color anywhere.
