Engine cutting out + hard start

Here I go again posting in the Carter carb section. I replaced my Q/Jet the other day with a 850 T/Quad. It has better idle and great WOT, I'd be really happy if it would start a whole lot better. Also accelerating from about 50 MPH it wants to cut out a little, doesn't seem to do this at cruise. I'm pretty sure I know what the problem is with the starting, probably those little square rubber O/rings in the main jet wells. If you start it right after you shut it off, no problem. Could these two problems be related? Any ideas besides save up for a Holley? :Dou:

Pulled the carb apart and one of the o-rings was missing altogeather. It starts better after sitting for a while but doesn't idle as well as it did when it was leaking fuel. Actually it idles best when the throttle plates are open to where it's getting into the transition slot. Seams that the idle circuit is to lean to me, any thoughts.

You stated you are using an 850 TQ. Is this the comp series 4846s, or one of the smoggy Chryster 850's? The Chrysler 850's, particularly the "lean burn" versions will need help.

Well it ain't the comp series but it's not leanburn either. Friend of mine had a 74 Plymouth with lean burn, ran great and got incredible gas milage for the time. When it started giving him trouble no one including the dealer could fix it. :blast: This carb is an early one I think, it has two small vent tubes instead of one large one like the later carbs. It ran real good on the car before but the cams been upgraded from a Poston GS116 to a Straightline 226/234 or something like that. Right now I have linkage problems, I can make the linkage work flawlessly as long as I'm not interested in opening the secondaries. As far as the idle I cant open the idle jets enough to richen it up with having to screw in the idle screw which gets me into the transfer slots. :Dou: Wish I could find my set of pin drills, I'd open up the idle ports a little, hey it's only a T/Quad and I have more.

I think you answered your own question here. The problem occurred when you changed cams, leading me to believe the cam's the culprit. It is very likely that the carb worked well with the stronger signal from the old cam, but the weaker cam signal won't deliver the fuel necessary until the metering is changed. It is very easy to blame the carb, not knowing the effects of the different cam on the engine. Ray
