Hi,i have a 1966 Electra 225 engine 401 nailhead, engine is no god can i usa a 350,or 430 etc....? or what can i use ? Bolt on? Kind Regards Kurt
1964, 1965 or 1966 401 cid or 425 cid Buick are the closest to bolt on. A 350 Buick is too weak for the mass of the car. 350, 430 and 455 Buicks are a different engines series, and will require more work.
Kurt, The ONLY true bolt-in would be a '64-'65-'66 from a Full Size car or a Riv. Whatever you do locate the engine code in front of the valley pan on the right side. This will tell yr. & CID. In your case the engine code would be MT if it's the original engine from your car. Going further the engine VIN on the left side will identify what it came out of. If you find a '65 or '66 GS engine out of a Skylark GS you will have to swap oil pans & oil pump pick-ups. EASY JOB. You can use a '63 or earlier by using an adapter in the rear of the crank to convert from a DynaFlow crank to a TH400 crank which is what you have in your Electra. BEFORE PURCHASING ANY ENGINE it MUST be still installed in the vehicle so you can hear it run & access it's condition. MAYBE you would be further ahead to just have yours rebuilt by someone who knows "NailHeads". Tom T.
The engine miss when i got the car. I live in Norway so it’s not easy too find parts like in the US. I have seen some Electra here in Norway with 350 chevy in. Small block. I have tried to put a 400 Pontiac 69mod but the engine is too high. And oil pan does not fits do to steering axel etc.,,
What is wrong with the current engine? If it isn't something critical, your best option is perhabs to fix it.. In Danish: Hvad fejler motoren? Hvis det ikke er noget voldsomt, så er det lettest at reparere den..
If Houmark does not find one in Denmark, try Erik in the Netherlands. He has a lot of connections in Europe.
I had a 67Electra year s ago it had 430 engine can’t remember if frame and front are same on 66 and 67. Anyone ho knows?
67 68 Electra frames are the same part numbers. A 66 is not the same as 67-68. A 65 is not the same as a 66.
So your question is, what engine you can drop in other than the nailhead? I have a 65' Electra with the 401, and I wouldn't have it any other way.. If your fabricating skills is up to the task, you can drop every other engine in.. I worked rotation in Stavanger..
Ok so the engine in 65 is not like the one in 66? I think if I go a engine with center sump oil pan it maybe will fit?
Ok så da er du i Stavanger fra tid til anden. Jobber du i olje industrien? Jeg jobber i Schlumberger offshore
64 - 65 - 66 is the same, so you could drop a 65 nailhead rigth in.. I worked man-hire company, and was hired out to Cre8, Hitec and Oceaneering..
I will hear some people here in Denmark.. FlynBuick, will the Th400 work on a nailhead? Sp400 and Th400 is almost the same, just without the switch pitch converter?
TH400 wont work without an adapter plate - very different BOP bellhousing pattern. You probably could build a ST400 Nailhead case with TH400 internals, and delete the SP feature but why bother? It's be easier to find the correct parts and enjoy the converter! If anyone has parts for these guys, I know a guy in CT that sends containers over to Sweden 2-3 times a year.
No I think a 64, 65 or a 66 401 or 425 Buick would work except for a GS (A body) donor. See Tom's post above. The architecture of the big block Buick engines were changed beginning with the 67 model year.
