I'm having my 340 engine rebuilt and I'm wanting to replace my exhaust. I want a throaty sound, but I don't want to wake the neighbors. Thinking about getting flowmasters. Should I go with 2.25, 2.50, or 3.00? Also, I want to go from manifold to tips and was wanting to know if it is going to break me....Greg

don't get flowmasters if you want a mellow idle and don't want to 'wake the neighbors'. my brother in law has headers, an x pipe and 2 chamber flows on his mustang, and while it sounds sweet, the idle is quite loud, and from inside my house i can always hear him driving off...i've counted before, and i can hear him shift three times before the sound fades away.

I was planning on getting just that setup on Friday-timely post. What would be a good substitute muffler, say Dynomax, or 3-chamber Flowmaster? any suggestions?

i have headers and dynomax ultra-flos on my 350. it has a quiet but throaty idle, but is quite loud when you get on it. i can honestly say it doesn't sound as cool as the flow's though, they just have a great roar...if you don't want the noise, though, maybe the 3 chambers will be a good compromise? i'm not sure if the lowered volume sacrafices the sound or not...

maybe the dynomaxs would improve with a cam, i'm not sure. i know there are plenty of people on this board with them.

Might I suggest the Flowtech After Burners. They aren't quite as loud as flowmasters, have a nice mellow rumble at idle and aren't overly loud around town when you get on it ,but they will definitely turn some heads. If I had to compare them to any other mufflers I would say they're a cross between flowmasters and and the "chambered exhaust found on the Chevelles from the factory.I have been very pleased with them and get a lot compliments on the sound.:TU:plus I think headers would only make them sound that much better! Can't go wrong on the price either.@$40 a piece from Jegs.

    Gregwood63,

Keep us posted on what you get.

I have the same engine, and also want to buy a new manifold-back system this year. Have heard good reports on the Walker Dynamax (spelling?) mufflers.

While I have read that the 340 manifold is highly efficient, the fact that 340 headers aren't made prevents us from buying a bolt-on A-body exhaust package. That cuts down on our choices.

So, please follow-up with what you do.
