ok, so whats the rule on size as in bigger is better or not necessarily so? and is mandrel bent really worth the extra $$? Stock is 2", so is 2 1/2" going to do me any good, is it going to kill my torque? This is for the Galaxie, so its not like its a front runner or even a mid-pack car. I can buy a complete stock exhaust kit from Waldrons for $550. mandrel bent is going to run $600 - 700 bucks in aluminized. Only one or two places here that do it, this place is the same that has done Dave Dudeks and a few other of the FAST cars. He'll do whatever size i want but suggested no larger than 2 1/4" or go with 2" mandrel. it'd still be better than 2" crush bent. hell, it even shows the 427 cars had 2" exhaust. The exhaust will pretty much suck up the rest of the budget for now but its probably the #1 thing to do on the list, especially since it doesn't have any tails, just the old original h pipe and dumps at the axle.
Hoping this will run equal to Tommy's 429 LTD
Thanks for any and all input.
    Mike

  2. JMHO - but with 428 cubic inches, I truly feel it could move enough air in and out to benefit from a 2.5" system. Are there any reputable shops locally that could do a non-mandrel bent 2.5" system reasonably? $350-$400 is the going rate around here for such a system. A decent "crush bent" 2.5 system has to be way better than a stock 2" system.

I know it is a different animal, but my old 2000 Z28 didn't lose any torque. I went from a single 3" SLP cat back with a cut out - run open at the track, to a 3" true dual system dumped at the axle. The car liked it enough that I had to retune it and add more fuel. Picked up almost .2 and 1.5 MPH. My car was bolt ons, stock internals and a measly 346 cubic inches at the time. Just food for thought... ::shrug::

    Mike,
The Montego Got Pypes 2 1/2" Stainless Chevelle exhaust. Boden and Tuttle did the same on his Torino. Just had to get an extra passenger side pipe.
And It was pretty much a deal $550 bucks. With Minimal tweaking it fit like a glove.
Picked up 3 tenths:Brow: Of course the old tail pipes sucked pretty bad.

Brian ran chevelle tailpipes on his 63 Galaxie Minimal tweaking also.

Of course, it might of just gone faster because I put GM stuff on it ??? Hmmmmmm:grin:

    Hi Mike
Tommy O'Malley used 2.5 non mandrel bent with Dyno Max Ultra flow mufflers(25.0" length end to end) with a H - Pipe on his 1970 XL last year. Which seem to work pretty good with 14.70 @ 93.00mph et slips with a 4400lb car. But if it were me I'd go with the mandrel bent 2.5 system with Dyno Max Ultra Flow mufflers & a H-Pipe. When your dealing with a 428 cu. in. air pump I feel the bang for the buck with mandrel bent is worth every penny. One other suggestion would be to contact Bill Kulenkamp, and get a quote from the place up in Taylor that bent the system up for his 1971 Mustang. I think they were pretty reasonable. Good luck Mike.

Thanks for all the info so far guys. Bob, I just sent Bill an email. Welded ultra flows or the traditional style version that's the polished stainless? I was thinking of going with the dynomax super turbo's. And X pipe or H pipe?

I used a Pypes 2.5 sytem with X pipe and turndowns on my 65 Gran Sport, and Dynomax 17749 20" mufflers. Quiet, great tone and .2 tenths.

When I added my pipes, the car immediately picked up .2 sec. After that, the tuning started!!!!

I talked with Bill and the price is the same or maybe actually a little more for what he has into his so Great Lakes Customs it is. It'll probably go in tuesday or wednesday for 2 1/2" with X pipe and dynomax super turbo's. I'll be talking with him more at the Autorama on Saturday.

    Hi Mike
I've been down for the count with the flu for the last week so I haven't been on the site. Tommy used the Polished Stainless Dyno Max Ultra Flows. But make sure you use the long 25" end to end casing mufflers. They breath almost straight through and have a better sound, especially at WOT. I really think you new P/Stocker is going to be a fun project. Good luck

Its at Great Lakes Customs ( http://www.greatlakescustoms.com ) right now having the 2.5" mandrel full length duals with balance tube (h-pipe) made up for it. I am going with the Dynomax Super Turbo's as the Ultraflow's just aren't in the budget. The wallet is screaming about this already, lol. Hopefully it should be done tomorrow. Hope you're feeling better Bob!

Picked the car up today, came out nice. Just could not afford the ultraflows, had to go with the Dynomax Super Turbo's. Sounds good but too quiet. Lol.

Looks good. Is that aluminized pipe? Or regular mild steel??

    Also, check your PM box!!:bglasses:

  13. That's nothing a garden hose can't fix. :Brow: The exhaust looks great. What does the butt dyno think of the upgrade?

OK, whats the garden hose trick?? C'mon and tell me!
It sounds good but its quiet, lol. Greg said it's the first time something has gone out quieter than when it came in. I'll get a video clip of it tomorrow.
Pricewise... uh yeah... I think I finally got my wallet to stop hemorrhging! :dollar: But its absolutely tit's so it was worth it.
    Aluminized pipe.

  17. Back in the mid 90's when I was a poor HS kid, I had a 5 liter fox mustang. Everyone had 2 chamber Flowmasters, I couldn't afford them with $300/month auto insurance. So every night I would park my car, and run a hose into the tail pipes. The local mustang guys called it "flooding the mufflers." After a few weeks of that, some of the packing had blown out and my car was louder. Still not the 2 chamber Flowmaster sound I wanted, but it didn't sound bone stock. With the factory Ford mufflers, it was whisper quiet even after I had gutted the converters. Doing this no buck mod fixed my plight for the time being.

Not sure you want to do that to a brand new set of mufflers. I would drive it around and let them "break in" a bit. A few heat cycles should do them good.

I've cut open a few walker super turbo's for warranty reason's, and there is nothing your going to blow-out of a super turbo to make it louder.
There are curved flow directors welded to both ends(where the outward dimples are), and I just don't think your going to blow anything out of them.

The balance tube is what is quieting down the exhaust, same way an X-pipe takes some of the bite out of the exhaust note, and tames down a lumpy cam.

I did notice that you used the long case mufflers, can't remember if they're 17734's, or 17739. The long case mufflers are quieter than the short 14" mufflers, but the long case out flow the shorties. It's a sleeper muffler.
