I've been using castrol pyroplex red for the past few years. Its very tacky amd a little on the thick side. Can't seem to find it anywhere lately. I bought some shell Rotella red wheel bearing grease fron Auto zone yesterday. Its still a lithium complex grease, but itd not tacky though. It's more of a conventional style grease like the old Kendall super blue. What are you using for wheel bearing grease?
Last time I was in there to repack it was a total cleanup of the old gunk and then in with Valvoline Full Synthetic. Had lots of thumbs-up from my car buds when I asked the same question you just did. Devon
I like the Red and Tacky stuff. Same thing we used on jet aircraft bearings, gear trunnions and flight control rode ends and many other places. It stays put. (and gets "pulled back into" bearings) I remember pulling drums off of cars and seeing most grease slung off the bearings, but do a tire change on aircraft and see red grease all over the bearings as if it was just assembled and pulled back apart. Figuring wheel spin at nearly 200 MPH, that red stuff must be good, so I found what the equivalent was in general aviation and pick up a can of that back in the 70s, and then when "Red and Tacky" showed up, I have used it since.
A few years back I started using synthetic green grease. A couple dollars more but I like that it has excellent temp properties, like synthetic oil. Used to use red and tacky.
X2 on Lucas, will also use Mobile 1 red as well. Availability is part of it. I hear good things about Amsoil but again availability.
Glad to read these reviews. I've been using Red N' Tacky for my tractor and mower for many years. Might be why I still have all 3 original spindles on my 1997 72" mower deck. knock on wood. Troy
