Finally got the new BB fired up. Didn't get much run time because of a couple concerns. First, it ran rough, got a couple pops through the carb. Is it possilble to have the plug wires off one and still run? Or maybe I have a bad wire. I pulled all the plugs and they looked OK. #2, the oil pressure is about 50 at 2000rpm-too high? Can't remember which spring they put in the pump kit. Lastly, how should my 214/224 469/493 cam idle. I was told it should have a fairly smooth idle. TIA for any info
Andy, don't start the car again until you check out a few things. Turn the engine (by hand) to TDC on its compression stroke, remove the dist. cap. The rotor should be pointing close to #1 position, check all your wires, routing and timing mark relative to damper. Go slow and double check everything as you go. Good luck
Andy, given the cam specs, seems pretty mild and shouls idle well. It is very possible to have the firing order mixed up and still run. Recheck firing order, especially 5 and 7. Depending on how long you let it run, if the plugs are all clean, it seems doubtful that a cylinder or 2 were not firing correctly.
I'm going replace the plugs and wires. The distributor base seemed like it got awfully hot. Not sure how normal that is but seemed odd to me.
it seems that the timing is off. your popping is the key. you shoul turn the crank (using a socket and a wratchet) until the timing mark is t zero and the number 1 piston is in the TDC position. then pop the dist in and put the rotor pickup so it is under/pointing to the 1 tower on the dist. it sounds obvious but if you have never done this before, it can confusing. take your time and go slow. john
I just did again. And I replaced the cap, coil, wires, plugs, which were all new. Same results. It just wants to chug. I don't know what else to check. Suppose I'll have to pull the V-covers and see if eveything is moving the way it should. Short of that, Ive just about had it. Its got to be something stupid, or major, hopefully not the latter.:af:
I didn't build it. The guy who did has been building for 30+ yrs. so I'd like to think its on right. I suppose I could pull the cover. How can I tell if its where it should be?
Yeah, I think thats next. Its not that old but you never know. Whats the easiest way to drain the tank? Might do that when I get home this evening.
Andy What I've done before to verify if it's a fuel problem before I drop the tank is disconnect the rubber fuel line from the hard line at the frame and drop it in a 5 gal can of gas. A mechanical pump will pick it up. That's how we run 'em on a stand. At least you'll know if the fuel is no good.
Yeah, I thought about doing that. I'm in a fairly confined area so that makes me pretty nervous. Looks like rain all day today so I won't be able to push it out. What the easiest way to drain the tank without dropping it? Will a siphon pump work from the line at the fuel pump?
I've seen lots of 30+ year engine "veterans" not have a clue, and/or just not check a set distance valvetrain during assembly. Is your valvetrain adjustable? If so, run the settings once again, and see if it doesn't pick up a cylinder or two. Too tight will cause various popping issues, depending on intake or exhaust.
Well I hope thats not the problem, but its always a possibility. Its basicly a stock rebuild, bored 030 and a bigger cam. I'll have another go over everything I can check, vac leaks, timing etc, and new gas and hope for the best. Again
