Flamethrower Exhaust

Discussion in 'Buick FAQ' started by PolishBuickGuy, Mar 20, 2004.

Hola amigos, (im not spanish), my friend at school was telling me about putting a flamethrower exhaust on my buick, which means doing:

1: putting a second coil from the distributor
2: hooking up a spark plug at the exhaust tips
3: put a switch in the cockpit, to transfer the spark to the rear,

    it would work like this

1: rev the engine up a bit
2: activate the switch for a little bit,
3: all the un-cumbusted fuel would be ignighted at the rear,
4: then let go of the switch and the engine keeps running

My question is , is this possible, practical, safe and is it cool?:bglasses:

    Thanks,

PS: I got my Permit on monday!, june 10 im 16! car still not running :(

It was done on old lead sled Mercs all the time.

I undestand that a unit is sold now with its own fuel source that does a better job.

    way cool

You used to be able to buy a model "T" coil which put out a continious high voltage. It came in a wooden box and you hooked it up to a 6v source.....high voltage in a stand alone box. Locate it in the trunk....It would fire the spark plug in the exhaust any time all the time!

If you search under "flamethrower exhaust" many kits will come up.

I would check your local ordinances. You used to see them at Daytona but I believe they banned them by local ordinance.

You may also draw a charge of careless and reckless driving by using one while in motion. They are not subtle --perhaps 10--20 feet of flame . At night they are quite a show but you will be noticed by your local law enforcement and they will find a charge that fits-- like c & r.

Some kits cut off the coil to the motor, you DO NOT want that kind, gas washes past the ring so you have to change the oil alot more. I'm looking for a kit for my '60 Lesabre also. I'm sixteen and have my permit (3 more months) also, how long do you have to have your permit for in Illinois? You only have to have it for 6 months here in S.C.

It doesn't, it either burns unburnt gas from the engine or gas from a seperate system

yeah, i was thinking that could hurt the engine.

In illinois we have to have our permit for ONLY 3 month, i got mine march 12, so i can get my license on june 12,

    here are some kits

From what I've heard it's a cool trick but you want to make sure your car runs very good first. As I understand it if your car backfires while the spark is in the pipe you can blow the motor.
I may be wrong but thats why I haven't done it yet, when I first saw it I had a ton of questions for the guy, it's neet.

no , it won't. It'll be the same thing as a normal (if there is a such thing) backfire.

I do believe rod and custom or hot rod did a short article on a kit about two years ago. Long story short, they had two key points to make: 1, make sure the spark plug is as far from the muffler as possible, they blew two flowmaster in the duration of the article. 2, Alwasy cut the switch to the plug before letting off the gas, otherwise you'll be blowing mufflers and possibly burn a valve(unlikely). Otherwise they said placing the plug 10-12 inches back fromt he pipe opening is ideal for flame shape. Farther back and the flame comes out longer and narrower, and closer to the exit results in a short, broad flame, like the picture above.
    Hope that helps a little.

I posted photos of the kit i make for my own cars... you dont have to follow it but it may give you an idea on how its done..

If you decide on using a fuel source (not raw gas from the motor) Propane is ideal....but ONLY if you can find a 12v solenoid shut off valve...most big automotive retail outlets will either know a supplier or maybe have some...
The solenoid valve is designed to be gas/liquid proof..and is the only real safe way to make sure y'all will never have leaks..

If you decide to use gas pumped from a bottle in the trunk.. make sure you fit a regulator of some description into the fuel line..so you can meter how much gas is used...i didnt do this the first time i set up a car for flames..and had too much gas pumping in...which resulted in it dripping onto the highway... which might look kewl as hell when y'all are cruisin...but could be a hazard if ya need to stop abruptly...I had a pool of burning gas build up under the trunk...Good thing i didnt have a leaky gas tank huh?!?!?!

Be safe...check out ya tank etc are in a sound condition etc...then and only then fit the flame kit up.

There is no way i'llbe able to put the plug 10-12 inches from the tip, I've got bellflower tips on my car (see pic.) and they are 30" long. Which pic are you saying? The first one works of the motor, the second works on a seperate system using gas

Sorry, I was reffering to the one with the separate system. But, couldn't you place the plug towards the center of the car, so it's under the trunk? I'm not sure I understand the problem...Do you not want to modify the tips?

I don't want the plugs in the tips to be seen, there is about 30" of pipe before it goes into the trunk (it actually goes into the trunk) I'll try to post a pic of what i mean later but my car is getting some work done at the moment
