After Katrina, the local junkyard literally overflowed with hundreds of cars, including a drowned Duster that I needed a few parts from. Today, for the first time since the storm, I saw a "We're Open" sign in front of the place and a big empty spot where the Duster used to be. I walked in and talked to the eldelry lady/owner. The conversation went (somewhat abbridged)... "Hey, do you still have that duster?" "Where was it?" (Literally) "Right in front of the door here." "How long was it there?" "About four months." p (Looks to the yard guy)"Do you know where it went?" (Looks at me) "The yellow car that was right in front of the door?" :Brow: "That's it!" :TU: "Went to the crusher yesterday." Of course. Well, I was invited to take a stroll through the yard to find whatever I could when I came across sonething unique. Now, I don't know if it's real, but I was a dark blue car, circa 1970's with Road Runner emblems and white decal stripes across the bottom of the trim. Not the popular model that comes to mind, but still a Road Runner. I actually spotted the car from many yards out and though there was something special about the front cap. The car is in desperate and dire condition, but if anybody's interested, the Junkyard is in Slidell, Louisiana off of U.S. Highway 190 by Northshore Blvd.
Very interesting. Keep your eyes open and keep us informed. There may be some good old cars worth saving again that were damaged by the storm and being junked by people who have lost interest with them because rebuilding their homes take priority.
Are You Kiddin? Another junkyard about 20 miles away has a poopload of Buicks! I think I counted twelve but I got lost and ended up back at the front so there may be more if they haven't been crushed. The guy also has a lot of old millitary stuff like jeeps and that big truck-thingy you see in M*A*S*H haulin' in patients. It is also in Slidell on the same highway. Mostly 60's stuff overall.
Where is this place? I'm in Baton Rouge and would like to see the place with the old buicks. Thanks, Dave
Slidell!!! It's in Slidell. Get off on Gause Blvd and go east until the road ends and then turn south. Go until that road ends and then turn east; you will then be on Business 190. After that, go about 10 miles (more or less) and you will see the yard on the right. You can't miss it because you will start to see big intermodal containers (that are locked and hold treasures and rare cars!!! - at least in my fantasy where I win the lottery and buy the junkyard they do) and cars about thirty yards before the entrance. Note that since the storm all the junkyards have been closed, probably due to the wave of cars they are processing. Unfortunately, my schedule will not allow me to pass by the place during business hours any time soon. Also note I beleive that junkyard was in a section of Slidell that was flooded, but don't quote me on that.
More like this... Two round headlights... http://www.v8buick.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=65678&stc=1
Aah, that's even later ('75) than the '72 I posted. Looks too much like starsky's car with that stripe.
you guys find all the good stuff. The only junk yards in my area are full of cars i dont like. Usually end up going with Honda or S10 loving friends, and every time i hope just to find something other than a 88 camaro.
The Best Junkyards in the World The best junkyards in the world (that I had ever seen) were in New Orleans East in the Industrial District. You could actually go from the front of one to the back and the cars would get older and older as you got lost. Good times, good times...
Checked out the junkyard yesterday. Your directions were on the money, but the guy had a big sign out front that read "CLOSED TODAY" Was not able to go in, but it looks really promising. I have a 65 Riv and I'm always looking for junkyards like that. Thanks for the heads up. I'll try again next week.
madrivdisease, If you are able to get in that yard and you find some skylarks please let me know. I live in Lake Charles,LA Slidel is a little far to drive on a hunch, but not too far for some good parts. Thanks, Richard.
toured the yard yesterday Found a plymouth from the 40s, a model A, two chevy trucks from the 50s,..but no buicks! The old man said they have sold most and are closed for good due to heat from the DEQ. Was a fun trip, but no score!
Lark72, i live in Lake Chuck and may have some 350 parts you could use. Two years ago I got rid og a real sweet running 350 as the garage was full. Let me know any parts you may need I have some odds and ends. Is your car running?.............Ward
