Drop the tank. It will help if you have as much fuel out of the tank as possible. I know of no shortcut.

cutting torch and hole in trunk floor.. is easier but not recommended.

why hasn't anyone followed honda's lead and put an access panel in the bottom of the trunk??!!!

my 87 with in tank pump has a nice lil panel in the bottom of the trunk.

i dont think that was honda's lead since buick put the access panel on the late 60s riv that had the electric fuel pump in the tank:Brow:

It seems to me that it's because all of the good ole GM designers of that day are long gone and this newer generation feels those "old guys" really have little-to-nothing to offer...afterall, that was over 30 years ago and today's engineers are waayyy to smart to look back at what the old fogey's did!:Dou:

    Just MHO given here.....:)

or the 4 cents of glue they don't use and the extra 10 cent part they dont need to make

thats 14 cents per car. and since generally fuel pumps dont go out under warranty. well... just a way to screw the purchaser

    fuel pump

topless, youll have to drop the tank. about a day before you do it get underneath the car and spray the bolts with rust remover. do this a couple times and really soak the bolts. this will help you if you have some rust and the tank is coming out for the first time. the suggestion about doing it with as little gas as possible is right on. youll probably have to tilt the tank when its coming down, make sure you plug the filler hose so you keep spillage to a minimun.

i personally dont like th idea of the access panel from an accident safety standpoint.
when i put the fuel injected engine in my 74 lesabre vert, i had to install a pump in the tank. the decision was easy to NOT put an access panel in my car .... dropping a tank is not a big deal.

and when you talk about plastic and thin metaled newer unibody cars, i think the access panel is an even more dangerous decision.
