Well, people are going to have different suggestions and many good ones. I would first look at my intake manifold to see if there is any missing paint or signs of gas stains under the carb. If so the carb or a junction may be leaking. Also look around the fuel pump. These are all fire hazards.

If clear I would look at the gas tank for a rust throgh tell, tell stain or a rubber hose leak near the tank.

Finally on older cars the fuel line itself can have a pin leak from rubbing or corrosion.

    smell

Well i dont have any leaks of any kind around the car, but i have this smell even while driving...my wife even tells me i smell like my car after driving it for a while, i guess the smell gets in side the car since the window is open. :gt:

    Marvin's65,

I have the same issues with my 1970 Buick Skylark 350 and my wife reminds me of the smell. My wife has been bringing it to my attention since 1996.

After TOTALLY rebuilding the Engine, Hoses, Cooling, Exhaust System, Transmission, and Rear End in January of this year, I have come to the conclusion that it has to be the Reformulated Gasoline and Additives.

This has been a longtime issue for my wife. I tried to find a solution by replacing Fuel Hoses in the back of the Gas Tank, Fuel Hoses at the Fuel Pump, new Rebuilt Carburetor, New Headers, Exhaust System and etc.

I telling ya, EVERYTHING but the Distributor is new!!

Again, I am lead to believe it's the Formulated Gas in the big city of Dallas.

Are there others that have the same problem?

have you checked the choke on the carb? could simply be sticking shut and causing an overly-rich condition.:Do No:

mine has the bad smell if I top off my gas tank. I also have a rubber hose leak on the top of the gas tank I havent fixed yet.

It was at first leaking out the fuel pump

if you have evaporative emmissions try to leave the tank slightly empty next time you fill up.

also I'm not sure they can leak this much but the 2 parts on the underside of the carb can also leak. I'm not sure what they are called but have to often be epoxyed over.

    Vent pipe grommet

Have you checked the condition of the vent pipe as well as the grommet surrounding it where it passes through the trunk floor above the rear axle on the passenger side?
I once had a grommet that was not seated properly so it wasn't fully sealing and that was causing fumes to enter the passenger compartment by way of the trunk.
It was most noticeable when I first started driving it but would dissapate after awhile, especially with the windows rolled down.
It was a real pain to track down that problem.
Pop open the trunk lid, take a look and sniff around back there. :TU:

Guys, what i am reading here is not actually gas, but I think what you are referring too is the emissions from our cars. If you start the car in the garage and leave the door closed for a minute, you will smell like that until you wash your cloths. That is pre cat uncleaned exhaust.

Hardly any way to get rid of it.

I asked about adding cats one time to perhaps clean up our fumes a bit, pretty much got laughed at, but I feel it could be an option.

your exhaust runs completely thru to the back of the car? with no holes in it?

    hmm...

unless the heat crossover casting broke (I had fixed the one on a 72 350.

though I don't know where the exhaust fumes would go to other than inside the engine.
