Gas vapor canister line routing?

I have a 71 Skylark with a 350, topped off with an Eddy 750. My gas vapor canister has been disconnected from the carb. When I hook it back up and the car warms up I get a rough idle. Is this supposed to be routed through a thermo-switch prior to going to the carb. or is there something else that is affecting the idle quality? With the vapor canister disconnected and the carb. port plugged the engine idles real nice.

there are drawings for different setups in the chassis manuals, and the line routing al the way from the tank http://boattail-riviera-by-buick.com/library/documents/documents.php

also note that the line for the canister, back by the vent lines has a valve in it - it may been changed with straighline , or a vacuum leak in the lines, bad canister.

I got that condition in my 72 when the vapor line (metal) along the passenger framerail rotted out and introduced more air.

As was mentioned there is a metering restriction back near the tank in the line. The line rots out, the restriction is bypassed and too much air is pulled thru the system.

perhaps when your motor is cold, the choke is providing enough fuel to cover the added air.

Where exactly are you hooking it to? Not sure on the 71's, but on the 72's, the line went to the air cleaner snorkel. If you are hooking it up to the PCV nipple on the Edelbrock carburetor, that will be one big vacuum leak. BTW, you do realize that a good Q-jet will run way better than any Edelbrock carburetor.

When I replaced all my fuel rubber lines, I didn't realize there was an orifice in there and threw that rubber line out. Does anyone know what size orifice goes in there and where can I get one?

I had a good old Quadrajet, but my ex-mechanic couldn't rebuild it right. I had to buy the eddy 750 just to get back on the road again.

I had the car out for a good long cruise today. The rough idle seems to have cleared itself up, all I need to do is tweak the idle speed a hair.
Larry, I need to get a stock 350 4 bbl air cleaner. I would much rather route the vapor line there than to the carb. It just keeps things simpler that way.

There are plenty of guys who can rebuild a Q-jet right. Ask around.

Does anyone know for sure that the 71/72 Skylark/GS has the restrictor for the purge system. In the service manual I see a diagram of the big Buicks having the restictor but did not see anything for the A-body?:Do No:

Any bowl vent line coming from a factory carburetor should be hooked up to a vent port, not a vacuum port.

I'm not familiar with the exterior features of the Edelbrock Performer series AFB clones, so don't know if they have a 3/8" canister vent line to hook the factory line up to?

The only good sound those carb make around here, is when they "tink" off the dumpster outside the shop. They are by far and above, the biggest POS for a carburetor I've ever worked on!........Cliff

There's only 1 e-brock I know of with an evap port and that's the 500cfm part number 1400. All the others even say not compatible with the evap system. I think you need to run it to the air cleaner to make it work right.

there should be a port on the passenger side by the fuel inlet, that should be perfect for evap canister....

I fabricated a brass elbow fitting to the bottom of my after market chrome air cleaner and hooked up the return line.
