Every year i go through the Qjet on this 350, new gaskets, pump, needle and seat, and filter, with a kit from a local parts shop. I have long wanted to put bronze bushings in the primary throttle shaft bores as is could grab hold of the primary lingage and feel the play. Also, after engine shutdown i could see a few drips of gas drop off the linkage. So, i knew there was unmetered air entering the carb.

This summer i made the purchase from Gessler for his rebuild kit, float, hi-perf pump, plunger and spring, and......the bushing kit.

I was quite tentative about drilling out the bores of this original carb, so i did a trial run on a junk yard buick qjet that my son picked up for $25 some years ago. We have actually tuned this junk yard carb that we call "Trusty Rusty" (because of the way it looks) to run quite well on the 350 and so we kept it as a spare. Anyway, after reading the instructions a few times, i did the bore drilling and bushing install on the spare carb with good results, giving me the confidence to do it on the original QJet.

So, last weekend i did the rebuild on the original QJet with all the Gessler parts, and the bushings, and i am really excited about the results. Much crisper throttle response, and i had to turn the idle mixture screws in a 1/4 turn each and turn down the idle speed 200 rpm to get back to 650 in neutral. Vacuum is very steady at 16", which is good for this cam and the 1.65 roller rockers.

To me the bottom line is.....Gesslers kit and instructions performed extremely well for this home garage mechanic.

Good stuff Greg!!!! And thanks for your continued support of our Buick hobby!!!

    GSXMEN Got Jesus?

Sloppy primary shafts/bushings are likely the single biggest problems on a Q-jet (or any carb for that matter).

Nice to hear the repair went well. Positive testimonials are always good too. Greg is one of the good guys in our hobby!:3gears:

    I am a big fan of Greg's site www.Quadrajetparts.com

His kits are updated with important upgrades like the ethanol resistant accellerator pump cup and a thicker than stock air horn gasket.

His site has every thing you would need to do a quality rebuild, and lots of parts that are hard to find.

Glad to hear your results were good! Nice work.

I'm thinking of rebuilding my carb too. Its a 7041544 350 A and has all stock parts, problably.

    Rebuild kit Q4002C $28.95

    Bushing kit Q4301 $59.95

Choke pull-off Q3801 $10.36 That's so there would be no bog when secondaryes open?

    Brass float Q1401B $7.95

    Anything else I should get?

    Freddy,
I would also check/replace the following:
    Secondary cam
    Secondary air valve spring
    Idle tubes
Secondary mainwell plugs with our replacement O-ring plugs

It would not hurt to have an extra set of airhorn gaskets.
If you have modifed the engine, it would be nice to have a selection of jets/rods to be able to fine tune your carb.
If you have lower manifold vacumm, due to larger camshaft, get the power piston spring kit.
You can not go wrong with our ethanol resistant garter spring accelerator pump assembly.

    I hope this is helpful.

I'm getting bushing sets for all my Q-Jet cores. I was attempting to tune the one on my 430 yesterday, and decided to try spraying some carb cleaner on the primary linkage. Vroom.
